The game is being developed by Just Add Water by following the original's design concept

Developer Just Add Water has undertaken a sort of remake of the classic 1997 hit puzzle platformer Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey last year, and some new screenshots showing the progress the team has made have surfaced.

Oddworld: New N' Tasty is a sort of remake in the sense that it's a completely new game that strives to retain the original's sense of humor, visual style and level design and to deliver an experience that will feel as close to the acclaimed platformer's as possible.

Just Add Water studio head Stewart Gilray has revealed that the game's art is "99 percent complete" in a recent interview with GameInformer, and that the game is coming along on schedule for the spring release, although no specific launch date has been disclosed yet.

"This is a rebuild from the ground up. I think there are maybe two textures in the game that existed in the original right now. Neither of them may exist in the finished version," Gilray shared.

Oddworld: New N' Tasty is currently being built in Unity, and the switch from another engine has caused the pushback from the initial release window of fall 2013.

"We went to Unity, because if we were working in the previous engine, we'd have to do a lot of custom coding ourselves. Unity has a PlayStation team in the UK. [The engine] has the trophy system built into it, so you issue a command in your code to unlock achievements or whatever, and whatever platform it's running on, it will do the unlocks on that system.

"In the old days, you had to write the Vita unlocks, you had to write the PS3 unlocks, the Xbox unlocks, the Steam unlocks,” Gilray commented regarding the engine switch decision.

He further stated that he was concerned about the PC format and piracy, thus the decision to postpone the PC launch and release for consoles first, in order to guarantee that console sales would not be affected by the pirated PC version's availability.

Gilray ended the interview by sharing that a number of new surprises and secrets would be waiting for players, aside from the three big secret features the team planned to reveal on launch.

Oddworld: New N' Tasty is expected to come out sometime this spring, for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita platforms, with PC, Mac and Linux to follow around a month later, and the Wii U version further down the line.

When being asked on Facebook about an Xbox launch, the team replied that "at this time, we don't have approval by Microsoft to launch on Xbox 360 or Xbox One. We're still talking to them."
