The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has announced that October 2013 will be the first fully-fledged European Cyber Security Month.

Last year, ENISA launched the European Cyber Security Month pilot project. Since the program was a success, it appears the agency has decided to make it an annual event.

“ENISA is a broker of cyber security knowledge. The European Cyber Security Month campaign makes it possible to share best practices, and to increase the results of the security communities’ work. It’s about your security, and in your best interest; online security requires your active participation,” noted ENISA’s Executive Director, Professor Udo Helmbrecht.

“In a time when cyber security is of increasing importance for society and the economy, the challenge is to bring the skills of citizens and SMEs up to speed, to improve the trust in public and private IT services, used in everyday lives.”

A total of 25 EU countries will take part in the more than 50 cyber security-related activities, including conferences, workshops, lectures, radio and TV shows, online games and fairs.

The list of participant countries includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden and the UK.

Over 40 partner organizations from the public and private sector will be involved in the European Cyber Security Month. Among them, there are Europol, ISACA, the European Commission’s Europe Direct network, and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

The main goal of the campaign is to promote cyber security among EU citizens and change their perception of cyber threats, and to provide the latest IT security information via education and sharing of good practices.
