Indian company Micromax is readying yet another budget-friendly Android smartphone, and while there’s no surprise here, the good news is that the handset will be powered by KitKat and will come with above average specs.

The so-called Micromax Canvas A290 has been recently leaked by MMXNewscaster, which also claims that the smartphone is aimed at the budget-friendly market. It appears that Micromax has decided to target the mid-range segment with a powerful handset priced lower than expected.

Although there’s no confirmation on the price yet, Micromax Canvas A290 might cost only Rs 13,000 ($215 / €160) off-contract, but the amount may be changed by the time the Indian company makes the smartphone official.

Speaking of which, rumor has it that Micromax plans to launch the Canvas A290 sometime next month, though a certain release date has yet to be confirmed.

On the positive side, some of the most important specs said to be packed inside the Micromax Canvas A290 have already been leaked, so Android fans can decide whether the smartphone is really worth it or not before the Indian OEM announces it.

Keep in mind though that these preliminary specs haven’t been confirmed by Micromax yet, so until an official announcement is made, we recommend our readers to take it with a grain of salt.

Still, given MMXNewscaster’s long history of pretty accurate leaks, it’s almost certain that these specs will be implemented in the final version of the Micromax Canvas A290.

That being said, let’s see what’s with the upcoming Micromax Android smartphone set for release next month. Well, first of all, the Canvas A290 will ship with the Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system out of the box.

However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as many Indian OEMs have already started to replace their mid-range Jelly Bean lineup of smartphones with KitKat devices.

OS aside, Micromax Canvas A290 is said to come equipped with a powerful 1.4GHz octa-core processor, probably provided by MediaTek.

The phone’s octa-core CPU will be complemented by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory, which will be expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

On the back, the Canvas A290 is rumored to boast an 8-megapixel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash, and full HD (1080p) video recording, while in the front there will be a no less impressive 5-megapixel camera for video calls and selfies.

Last but not least, the upcoming smartphone will be powered by a high-capacity 2010 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by the manufacturer. Stay tuned for more updates on the Micromax Canvas A290 release.
