Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has been long rumored to plan bringing to the market a smartphone that would pack an octa-core processor inside, and it seems that we’re getting closer to the day when that will happen.

The smartphone has just received the necessary approvals from the Chinese authorities and should become available for purchase as HTC Desire 616 (or 616w in some countries).

According to PhoneArena, the new mobile phone appears to have been designed specifically for the Chinese market, given the fact that users there appear fond of octa-core devices.

The yet unannounced handset is expected to land on shelves with a 1.7GHz octa-core MediaTek processor packed inside as well as with 1GB of RAM.

Thus, the device should be able to offer appealing performance capabilities, though it might not end up being one of the fastest smartphones out there.

HTC Desire 616 should feature a plastic body when brought to the market, while measuring 142 x 71.9 x 9.1 mm. The phone weighs 150 grams.

Apparently, HTC will bring it to shelves with a 5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 720p resolution, which will make it about the same size as the HTC One M8 that went official yesterday.

On the back, the HTC Desire 616 is said to feature an 8-megapixel camera with LED Flash, which should be capable of recording videos in full HD resolution.

At the same time, the smartphone should arrive on the market with Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system loaded on top. Given that this OS version is rather old, it would not come too much as a surprise if HTC upgraded it to a newer platform iteration.

Unfortunately, specific details on the availability of this device haven’t been provided as of now, though the phone appears confirmed in five color versions, including black, blue, white, red and yellow. Info on pricing is missing as well.

The upcoming availability of HTC Desire 616 appears set to confirm that HTC has plans for a nice range of smartphones powered by MediaTek’s chipsets.

Earlier this month, the Taiwanese vendor announced the HTC Desire 310 with a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582M CPU, and it is expected to reveal some other handsets in the not too distant future.

As for HTC Desire 616, it remains to be seen whether the vendor will bring it to other markets out there as well and when exactly that might happen. Stay tuned for updates on the matter.
