The kitten's mother is rather old, keeper say the birth of this cub is a “miracle”

An Ocelot living at Cameron Park Zoo has recently given birth to a male cub whom keepers have decided to name Aztec.

By the looks of it, the birth of this cub is somewhat of a miracle. That is because his mother, Maya, is 14 years old and therefore past her breeding age.

According to Zoo Borns, staff at Cameron Park Zoo tried to get Maya pregnant by resorting to artificial insemination back in 2012.

However, the procedure failed and they concluded that the female Ocelot was probably too old to have kittens.

Much to their surprise, that was not the case. On the contrary, several months later, Maya and her beau, Gustavo, decided to have a kitten the old-fashioned way.

Aztec appears to be in good health, and spends most of his time hidden inside his nest box.

The kitten hasn't yet made his public debut, but keepers say it won't be long until visitors to the Cameron Park Zoo get the chance to see him.
