Obsidian Says Digital Distribution Will Kill Used Games Market

Speaking to IndustryGamers Chris Avellone, who is the Chief Creative Officer at developer Obsidian, has said, “Our eventual hope is that we can stockpile enough resources to release our own titles digitally. Smaller games can be very satisfying projects to work on, and it would be great to do that. But it’s going to take time for us to get there; we want to make sure we do it right.”

The move towards digital, for an independent developer as Obsidian, means that the company will rely less on publishers and will be able to deliver smaller games quicker to its fan base.

Avellone also believes that the move towards digital will mean the end of the used games market, which leads to losses for the developers and publishers.

The developer, who is a veteran of role playing game development, points to Fallout: New Vegas as a good model of how digital distribution coupled with downloadable content can lead to better experiences for the developer and for more quality content for the player base.
