Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity is getting ready for launch now, and developer Obsidian Entertainment has already started working on its sequel.

Pillars of Eternity promised a glorious classic role-playing game experience and managed to raise almost $4 / €3.5 million over the course of its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

The game is designed as a spiritual successor to the highly popular Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series of classic role-playing games, and comes from some of the same people who created them, former members of Black Isle Studios, the same team who created publisher Interplay's lauded post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout 2.

The team is getting ready to ship the game, and Obsidian Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Feargus Urquhart mentioned that they would be starting work on the expansions promised as a part of the Kickstarter campaign.

The developer is already planning to begin the talks related to Pillars of Eternity's sequel at the end of the month, as the key guys on the team have already come up with a list of what they want to do, including new game systems and other exciting details.

Kickstarter is a great platform for independent projects

Urquhart mentioned that Obsidian could turn to Kickstarter once again in order to garner the necessary funds for the development of Pillar of Eternity 2, but for the time being, the team is waiting for the first game to come out.

"I think it might be a good time again for a Kickstarter, so we're talking about it. It's not 100 percent. The reason is because first we didn't want to do it until [Pillars of Eternity] came out. The second thing is that the Kickstarter stuff is kind of up and down here and there. But the Shadowrun guys look like they're pretty successful," Urquhart told Polygon.

Shadowrun Returns developer Harebrained Schemes is currently undergoing a pretty successful campaign for the follow-up to 2013's hit cyberpunk role-playing game, Shadowrun: Hong Kong, coming with a change of scenery, more brilliant writing, and challenging tactical combat.

Pillars of Eternity is scheduled to come out on March 26, headed to Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux.
