Fallout: New Vegas technology is still good, Obsidian says

After many people criticized the recent Fallout: New Vegas role playing game for its numerous glitches and the fact that it needed quite a few patches to get it into a barely functional state, the developer, Obsidian Studios, has revealed the Gamebryo engine, coupled with the custom GECK, is still an impressive piece of technology.

Fallout: New Vegas has just been released by Obsidian, and published by Bethesda, and is the next installment in the post apocalyptic RPG series after Fallout 3.

Many fans eagerly awaited the game, and hoped that Obsidian would deliver a great experience, and, unlike the buggy Fallout 3, would be free of glitches.

Sadly, that wasn't the case, as New Vegas is currently filled with bugs and glitches, ranging from hilarious ones to serious, game ending others.

Still, Obsidian senior designer Chris Avellone says that the GECK technology is still impressive, especially when it comes to creating wide open worlds with RPG mechanics.

"One thing I like about GECK is that when it comes to creating an open-world environment, like we've done for New Vegas, it's pretty impressive and took care of a lot of what we needed - and we have experience with working with an open-world engine before," he said.

"Being able to see that technology and see how [Bethesda] structured all of the data was really important for us as a studio and we thought the GECK was pretty solid, even though it's been through a couple of iterations and is a long standing piece of technology," he added.

Still, even if it is an impressive engine from a technical standpoint, Avellone admits that there are a few problems with it.

"I'm not going to say it's the prettiest engine out there - it doesn't have the best animation and there's certain limitations to the facial structures you can build with the characters. But at the same time it allowed us to create really fun quests, really cool characters and a really huge world that was fun to explore. So from an RPG perspective that's what I want."

Even if it is great for creating RPGs, the facts of the matter still show a very glitchy game, which has already disappointed quite a lot of players through different bugs and save game corruptions.

Hopefully all of these things will be patched in the near future, and everyone can enjoy a great post apocalyptic experience in Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm the biggest fanboy of Fallout, but this release was horrible, it's as though they did no testing at all?!?! Tempted to put it back on the shelf until a few more patches come out.
P.S You owe me 2 hours gameplay from last night due to another crash........ * you Obsidian.

seriously, im not a game tester, but i identified about 100 bugs and programming errors within a couple hours of playing... its literally like a really rough beta version that had zero testing before release

This game was never beta tested .
Chris Avellone and the rest of Obsidian should be down right ashamed of releasing Fallout NV

All i hear are excuses . Chris is just trying to save face and cover his * because he knows he and Obsidian released a game that is BROCKEN and uplayable and still charging $$$ for it.

thank god i bought the extended warenty, returning it today
