The first official patch for Bethesda's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is finally out, bringing the game up to version 1.1.511.
(
notes here,
download UK/EU/AU here, and
US here.) It appears to be the final version
of a beta patch that was released some time ago.
The somewhat late release of the patch seems to anger veteran CRPGists even more. By introducing paid pluggins and with the game overall design targeting console teenager gamers, Bethesda managed to successfully ward off many of the TES veterans. "I like Oblivion. It's a decent FPS and I get to roleplay myself being bored when playing it", said one of
the "learned" members, and further complained that, on the official forums, he is censored every time he had something to comment against the game.
On the other hand, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has rallied one of the largest mod communities in the history of games thanks to the advanced, user-friendly Game Editor.
The truth is somewhere in the middle. One thing is certain; Oblivion had some serious technical problems that Bethesda seems to have dealt with through their latest patch.
Members of the two major CRPG Forums (
RPGDot and
RPG Codex, especially) weren't satisfied, however.
From their point of view, the major problem of the game is the 13-year-old approach and the flawed character management (especially the level tweak). And such aspects are impossible to solve, maybe only by remaking the entire game.
