Tom Cruise is back on the big screen with “Oblivion,” which opened in the US this weekend, landing him his best North American opening outside the “Mission Impossible” franchise and “War of the Worlds.”

Considering how poorly “Jack Reacher,” his previous film, performed at the box office, that’s definitely excellent news.

“Tom Cruise's sci-fi pic Oblivion opened to $38.2 million [€29.2 million] at the domestic box office to come in No. 1 after a better-than-expected performance and despite a B- CinemaScore,” The Hollywood Reporter says.

“Overseas, the Universal pic continued to please, grossing $33.7 million [€25.8 million] in its second weekend for an international cume of $112 million [€85.8 million] and worldwide total of $150.2 million [€115.1 million],” it adds.

“Oblivion” had an estimated budget of $120 million (€91.9 million) so, after just two weeks, Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski (and the movie studio) know for a fact that they have a hit on their hands.
