The fact that the US is presently facing a serious threat to public health - i.e. many people are either overweight or obese - is no news. However, one recent report argues that, by the year 2030, 13 states will witness their obesity rates reaching more than 60%.

Of course, this predicted development in terms of the overall wellbeing of American citizens will only occur if things continue to unfold in the same manner, and people do not begin paying more attention to their dietary habits.

According to PETA, one very simple solution to this problem is having everybody become a vegetarian.

As members of this organization explain, choosing to become a vegan is not just about showing that one cares about animals. Quite the contrary: it is also about keeping fit.

PETA's Executive Vice President, Tracy Reiman, shows how, “Going vegan doesn't mean skimping on taste, and it's the easiest and healthiest way to lose unwanted pounds and keep them off.”

Apparently, the US Academy of Nutrition and Diet already made a case of how, most of the times, vegetarians weigh 18% less than people who eat dairy and meat typically do, so at least from this standpoint PETA's claims lack anything but valid arguments.

Seeing how previous campaigns meant to encourage vegetarianisms proved futile, probably because they mainly emphasized the fact that the meat and dairy industries harm animals, PETA now wishes to tackle the matter in hand from a different perspective.

Thus, the organization plans to make American citizens come face to face with billboards showing a fat man whose stomach was made to resemble a pig.

The message accompanying this image will read as follows: “You Are What You Eat: Go Vegan.”

As Tracy Reiman explains, “PETA's billboards will remind American that they can save their health – and animals – simply by picking up fiber-rich heart-healthy plant-based meals instead of stuffing themselves with meat, eggs, and dairy products.”
