Sweden-based equipment manufacturer Obducat has spilled the beans over a mysterious HDD manufacturer that is currently buying lithography equipment in order to deliver incredible-capacity hard-disk drives. The new storage
media is alleged to hit the shelves in less than one year and is based on patterned technology.

According to the company's spokespersons, Obducat just inked an agreement with a large HDD manufacturer to supply it with $11.13 million worth of lithography equipment. The agreement stipulates that Malmo-based Obducat will deliver the manufacturer a customized "production-ready" Sindre lithography machine, a behemoth-like device used especially for creating ultra-high density surfaces specific to the "patterned media" technology.

"This represents a major breakthrough for Obducat. We have dedicated a tremendous amount of efforts within the field of hard drive media technology for several years and this agreement means that we will now go in to a close collaboration together with a major player in the industry," said Patrik Lundström, CEO of Obducat.

The collaboration does not end here, as Obducat claims that it might secure other orders from the same manufacturers in Sindre machines. It is alleged that the mysterious HDD manufacturer would be Fujitsu, given the fact that it has been working on patterned media technology since 2005. Canon was also experimenting with patterned media technology, but it is far from being a major player on the HDD market.

"The underlying potential in this agreement is of significant magnitude and the global market potential within HDD industry exceeds 300 SINDRE HDD systems within the next five years," continued Lundström.

The patterned media technology can achieve storage densities of up to one terabyte of data per square inch of substrate. Sindre systems can create holes as small as 17 nanometers in diameter, which would account for impressive storage densities.
