Other World Computing has released the first high-performance solid state drive (SSD) upgrade for the 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display, the OWC Mercury Aura Pro.

Available in 480GB capacity, the 6G (6Gb/s) SandForce Driven Mercury Aura Pro offers 87.5 percent more capacity than the factory 256GB model and, instead of replacing the original module, it joins it, for a total of 736GB of storage.

Those who purchase the Aura Pro directly from OWC until September 30 will receive the OWC Envoy Pro USB 3.0 bus-powered portable case “for re-tasking the factory flash module as an external drive.”

The Mercury Aura Pro for 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display can now be pre-ordered for $579.99 / 472 EUR. The device begins to ship on August 21.
