Most external peripherals and storage devices, portable or otherwise, connect to computers via Universal Serial, and while this holds true for the latest creation from OWC, there's more to say about it.

An external Blu-ray disc writer, the OWC Mercury Pro External has not only USB 3.0 support, but also eSATA connectivity and FireWire 800 (mostly found only on Apple Mac systems).

Thus, it is compatible with pretty much every product out there likely to be able to order an optical drive to read or write on a disc.

And the types of supported discs are high in number. Indeed, one might be so bold as to say that all optical discs are supported.

Even BDXL Blu-ray discs, with three or four layers and, thus, 100 GB and 128 GB capacities, respectively, can be written onto. The speed is of 16x.

The OWC Mercury Pro External has a buffer memory of 4 MB and uses double shielded FireWire 800 (1394b) connecting cable (9-9 pin cable), or double Shielded USB 3.0 Standard-B to Standard-A cable, depending on the source system.

Smile DiscLabel software, Roxio Toast 11 Titanium media toolkit, and the Prosoft Engineering Data Backup 3 program ship in the box of the OWC Mercury Pro External. All for $168 / €168.
