The newest product from Other World Computing looks rather like a NAS device, but actually isn't anything of the sort.

Sure, it's a big storage drive, but it's not network connected. Instead, it expands the storage capacity of systems, or provides expansive backup options, via USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA ports.

Called Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 , it is a RAID storage device with four bays and, thus, space for four 4TB HDDs.

Sure, RAID setups will eat some of that total capacity, but it's a small sacrifice for the incredible read/write speeds inherent in such configurations, not to mention the security.

RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, span, and independent modes are all supported.

That said, depending on the capacity of the HDD, the price goes from $549.99 / €549.99 to $1,295 / €1,295.
