It works just fine with PCs too of course, though it might need a format

Apple is known for advertising its Mac systems as computers that actually aren't computers, at least not in the same sense as regular PCs. The Macs have proprietary software, the Mac OS operating system, an all-in-one build and, of course, the long-standing silver-white look.

For an accessory to “go with” Apple Macs, it needs to reflect similar aesthetic values, as well as support the software.

Other World Computing is one of the companies that like to periodically release an Apple-ready product or two.

The latest thing to leave its labs is the OWC Envoy Pro EX ultra-portable Solid State Drive (SSD).

Essentially, it is Aura Pro 6G SSD with Ultra-efficient Block Management and Wear Leveling technology.

It uses the USB 3.0 interface standard to communicate, achieving 436 MB/s transfer speeds, which is a lot. There are SATA 6 Gbps units that don't manage that much.

The drive looks normal otherwise, in form factor apparently more compact than 2.5-inch, although the anodized aluminum enclosure is deliberately fashioned with a similar hue to Mac computers.

We're tempted to compare it to a sleek, white paperweight, but it is just a little large for that, though some may disagree.

"We're very excited to add the ultra-portable Envoy Pro EX to our storage solution lineup," said Larry O'Connor, founder and CEO, Other World Computing.

"Its functionality combined with its rugged, yet aesthetically pleasing aluminum design make the Envoy Pro EX a beautiful addition to any system."

There are two OWC Envoy Pro EX SSDs up for sale: the 240GB Envoy Pro EX and the 480GB Envoy Pro EX. The former has a price of $319.99 / €319.99, while the latter sells for $599.99 / €599.99.

Big prices, to be sure, but then again Apple's items and related gadgets always cost more than regular PCs and peripherals/accessories.
