News about new SSDs come out all the time, but not often can a company brag about prizes earned as a consequence of creating such a product, so it was not overly surprising to see OWC enthusiastic about the awards it got at Macworld 2011.

The thing about solid state drives is that they are many times faster than hard disk drives and, especially in the case of external units, more enduring.

Granted, in their early days, the lack of TRIM and the very low storage capacity did prevent them from gaining traction too quickly, but once these issues were solved, popularity grew.

Now, the price is the main factor behind the continued dominance of HDDs on the consumer and enterprise markets.

Obviously, companies kept making SSDs, and OWC seems to have reaped quite some benefits from its creation of the Mercury Aura Pro Express series.

As the company's most recent press release has it, OWC received two major awards at Macworld Expo 2011, both of them for the above mentioned solid state drives.

Specifically, they stood out from the thousands of exhibited products (from over 230 exhibitors) by earning the “Best of Show” title from Macworld Magazine as well as “Best Mac Hardware” honors from MacLife Magazine.

They were recognized for their peak data rates of 275 MB/s, their capacities of up to 360 GB and even such things as helpful free online installation guides.

“It is gratifying to receive recognition for the Mercury Aura Pro Express SSD from the two biggest Mac oriented media titles,” said Larry O’Connor, Founder and CEO, Other World Computing.

“We strive everyday at OWC to develop cutting edge products our customers can install themselves to get the highest level of performance and reliability from their technology investment.”
