Other World Computing has entered the spotlight in order to announce that it has finished development of its latest solid state drive line meant for 'prosumer' desktops and notebooks. Know as the Mercury Extreme Pro, the storage devices. Among all other OWC SSDs, are the most capacious, even while their performance is on par with that of more expensive solutions.

There are three major benefits that the new OWC drives bring. First off, though they come in capacities as low as 60GB, they can go as high as 480GB, higher than any other model the company has. Secondly, the devices consume up to 1/7 less power than competing solutions. This may not be especially important for desktops, but notebooks can definitely always make do with a bonus to battery life.

The third major asset of the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSDs is their actual performance. For one, they employ 7% over-provisioning, which enables a higher level of data reliability. The other major feature is the actual transfer speed. Other World Computing claims that its products can achieve data transfers of 285MB/s. This is quite a noteworthy feat, even among other SSDs. Not only that, but OWC guarantees that this speed will not degrade over time, thanks to the implementation of Block Management and Wear Leveling technologies.

The new storage devices will perform very well as boot drives, since they will greatly improve operating system load times and overall performance. Also, by means of the SandForce DuraClass technology, up to 100X higher data protection, compared with 'ordinary' SSDs, is provided.

"The four new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD models give consumers the most affordable options for adding the pinnacle of internal drive performance to their Mac or PC," Larry O'Connor, CEO, Other World Computing, said. "With category leading performance and technology features not found in other brands, these new models are ideal for everyday users seeking near instantaneous and reliable data access."

All OWC Mercury Extreme Pro models, with capacities of 60GB, 120GB, 240GB and 480GB, are already available, at prices of $219.99, $379.99, $699.99 and $1,579.99, respectively.
