Other World Computing decided it was time to provide anyone from consumers to professionals with a so-called desktop hardware RAID storage solution which, in exchange for a hefty price, can pack a very solid storage capacity.

At the start of December, Other World Computing revealed that it had expanded its collection of Mercury Rack Pro Rackmount RAID devices by adding a model with a capacity of 12TB.

In its latest announcement, the outfit did something similar with its collection of desktop hardware RAID storage solutions.

Basically, OWC released what it calls the high-capacity Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2, noteworthy for the fact that it houses hard disk drives of 3 TB.

To be more specific, the RAID storage solution is equipped with four 3.5-inch HDDs of 3 TB, leading to a total capacity of 12 TB.

Needless to say, 12 TB is a huge amount of storage for any application and will no doubt more than suffice for the purposes that OWC has in mind, as it delivers “massive storage/backup capacity in a desktop sized footprint.”

That said, the outfit designed the Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 with the intention of it being used for not just backup, but also for A/V editing, photography, music and graphics needs.

For those interested in actual specifications, the four HDDs inside the device have platter rotary speeds of 7,200 RPM (rotations per minute) and can be set up in multiple ways.

RAID 0, 1 and 10 configurations are possible, as is Span, each with their own speed and reliability benefits.

Additionally, the device can connect to PCs or Mac Systems via FireWire 400, FireWire 800, eSATA or the USB 2.0 interface.

Finally, the OWC 12 TB Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 is already available, for the price of $1,400, and backed by a three-year warranty.
