OTTO might look like the perfect hipster gizmo but it’s actually pretty cool

Having a camera that can take photos, shoot video or both is way too mainstream for you? Well, how about you take a look at the OTTO Kickstater project, which temps you with a piece of hardware capable of “snapping” animated GIFs.

But if this doesn't make it hipsterish enough, check out this fact. The OTTO is actually the first consumer product build on Raspberry Pi; therefore, it can to accommodate a healthy dose of hacking. On top of that, you can extend it anyway you like.

Anyway, back to GIF snapping, OTTO uses a hand-crank in order to achieve this feat. The camera boosts a very colorful design, but sadly to my eyes it looks like too much of a toy.

There’s a companion app that can be used to pair the camera with a smartphone. From there, you can select different modes of use, including GIF capture, time-lapse, photo booth tricks and filters. The community can contribute too, by sharing their own modes in the library.

OTTO comes with a bunch of accessories like the Arduino-powered flash bulb that brings about some robot vision fun letting you trigger the flash when a certain movement is detected.

The camera also has an OLED 96 x 96 display located on the top and a 35mm f/2.0 lens and will sell for $199 / €145 (or $149 / €109 if you’re an early adopter).
