At its next press event, which is supposedly scheduled for next month, Apple plans to release not only the much anticipated OS X Yosemite, but also a new version of the 27-inch iMac that sports a Retina display.

The 5K iMac will have slightly higher specs than current-generation models, and it will be unveiled in October, according to a source speaking to Jack March.

The source

The blogger relays in a post dated September 29, “A source familiar with Apple’s plans tells me that Apple is indeed planning to launch a Retina iMac at their next press event, however the 27″ Model will be the only model that gets this feature.”

According to this person, the all-new iMac will sport a 5120 x 2880 resolution. Evidence of such high resolutions has been found in Yosemite betas. In other words, the Retina iMac isn’t a surprise, and it was actually expected.

The hardware

Apple’s new iMac will have higher specs, including an Intel i7-4790K processor clocked at 4.0GHz, as Broadwell CPUs are reserved for next year’s update. Graphics-wise, the system will employ an AMD card, like the 2013 Mac Pro.

The 27-inch iMac will be the only all-in-one Mac to have a Retina display, at least for now.

The source tells March that he’s “almost 100% sure the 21.5″ model will not get a Retina display and will keep at 1920×1080, it will also keep the same design like the new 27″ iMac.”

The source noted that smaller, 21.5″ iMacs are likely to get Retina screens when Broadwell chips make their way into the configuration.

The launch

According to this person, the super-powerful iMac is not far off. Apple plans to make the announcement as soon as next month, at its next press event. The event will probably not be centered around the new iMac, but around OS X Yosemite, the company’s all-new operating system for desktop users.

The Cupertino giant has seeded numerous betas of the software, giving a lot of people a full picture of what the OS is all about. In other words, Yosemite won’t be much of a surprise either.

To spice up the event, Apple may introduce the rumored 12.9-inch iPad Plus (or Pro, or Maxi, as some rumors name it). The enterprise-oriented tablet is said to be an answer to uber-tablets designed by rivals Samsung and Microsoft.
