A new Mavericks developer beta released this week includes the desktop version of Apple’s iBooks application, one of the many new features included in OS X 10.9, which is scheduled to debut this fall.

Apple released OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 5 yesterday, adding a number of tweaks and fixes, but also the first implementation of iBooks on the desktop.

As you’d expect, the software retains all its original functions from the iOS version and expands the feature set with a few new options of its own, as well as better navigation features (thanks to the expanded real estate on the computer screen).

A video of the OS X iBooks app is now available (embedded above) for your viewing pleasure. iBooks will be a free service in OS X Mavericks, and it will have full access to the iBooks Store when the new Mac OS debuts this autumn.
