Notification Center is one of OS X’s best features. Introduced with OS X Mountain Lion in 2012, the alert system has been on an evolutionary course that peaks in OS X Mavericks with all-new features.

The best thing about Notification Center in OS X 10.9 is that it’s interactive, meaning you can now reply to a message from the notification itself. Same goes for FaceTime calls, and other stuff.

“Notifications let you see what’s up — and now they let you get things done, all without leaving the app you’re in,” says Apple.

“With OS X Mavericks, you can interact with your notifications, so you can reply to a message, respond to a FaceTime video call, or delete an email right from a notification.”

There’s more. If you’re the type who reads the news a lot but has little time to do so, you can rig Notification Center to serve up breaking news, sports scores, auction alerts, and everything else you can get a feed for. And you don’t need any running web browsers for it either.

Finally, users who are in constant contact with the world through their computer will never miss an event thanks to the “summary” feature which lines up all the alerts they received while they were away right on the log-in screen.

“The Mac has consistently outpaced the PC industry and OS X continues to be the most innovative and easy to use operating system in the world,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, at WWDC 2013.

Apple will make OS X Mavericks available to the general population this fall. The software is currently under evaluation by the developer community and is getting purged of bugs with every new beta seeded by Apple.
