OS X Lion Random Crashes, Black Screen Reported by Users

Apple may have to push Mac OS X 10.7.1 out the door sooner rather than later, if it wants to tone down some of the threads actively discussing the various issues surrounding Lion, the company’s latest Mac OS version.

A quick trip to Apple Support Communities will soon reveal even to the untrained eye that something is going on with OS X 10.7 (Lion), the latest iteration of Apple’s desktop operating system.

Notably the most common complaint of all is Lion crashing randomly, followed by a black screen with the computer remaining unresponsive.

Customers have found that the only way to get the system working again is to shut it down by force.

“Lion crashes ever now and thenand [sic] stays on a black screen. Its totally unresponsive, all I can do is force shut down but I've done this about 4 times already today,” writes whetty101 in a thread that has racked up over 12,000 hits so far.

The discussion is ongoing, with most commenters sharing a similar experience. At 18 pages long, it appears these customers are not going to run out of anger fuel any time too soon.

While some are trying to troubleshoot the issues themselves, others are pointing fingers at Apple demanding a fix.

It is worth noting that “Lion randomly crashes - black screen” is just one of multiple ongoing discussions on the same topic.

Numerous threads containing similar (and sometimes almost identical stories) have recently emerged on Apple Support Communities, of which we can highlight the following:

iMac screen randomly going black after lion upgrade

Screen goes black after upgrading to lion!

OS Lion keeps randomly crashing. Anyone else?

Mac OS X Lion 10.7 black screen crashes (and SSD stalls again)

It is fair to give Apple the benefit of the doubt here, as many of these customers have “upgraded” from Snow Leopard to Lion.

These threads merely act as confirmation that a fresh install will always do an OS justice, but that doesn’t take the ball out of Apple’s court either.

It was the company’s job to ensure Lion would install properly on a large number of configurations with an even larger number of potential scenarios for failure.

Bear in mind that this is just one of multiple issues reported with OS X Lion. As noted above, we expect Apple to ship the first maintenance release of Lion (OS X 10.7.1) relatively soon.

The Mac maker is known to be actively testing OS X 10.7.2 already with a focus on iCloud services.

Have you upgraded to Lion? How has your experience been so far?

The core temp. is around 120F now and the avg. in SN Leopard I was getting was 95F, not sure why it would do this, but it didn't start till I upgraded to Lion.

Very smooth but still has some small bugs.

I want them to release 10.7.1 after it has been tested thoroughly.

Buy a PC and windows so you will not be fried.

Comment #5.1 by: pixelmonkey on 22 Apr 2012, 17:22 GMT

yeah, buy a PC and never, ever get any work done due to crashes, freezes, viruses, malware...

No problems here. It must be the Hawaiian air.

Comment #7 by: PapaJ on 31 Jul 2011, 01:32 UTC reply to this comment

It's annoying, but hardly a reboot. Just tap the brightness key, F2.

I'm having the same 'black screen/freeze' issue with my late 2010 MBP 13". I've upgraded to Lion about 3 weeks ago and faced this annoying bug 4 or times already. Never experienced anything like this with Snow Leo. I'm sure it's Lion and I'm sure Apple will take care of this but still. this is very much Windows-like and it's not a compliment. Not I set the sleep settings to 'never' until an update is released and this bug is fixed for good.

I have been running OS X 10.7 Lion for several weeks now. I hang several times a day after intentional or automatic sleeps. I have noticed my 2.2 GHz Mac Book Pro Intel Core 2 Duo seems appreciably slower and less responsive since installing Lion. I am also now seeing 'twitchy' behavior - windows opening unexpectedly. All three unpleasant behaviors are reminders of MS Windows experiences. Based on this thread I will disable sleep and only shutdown until an upgrade or other fix is available. Hopefully this will help.

It's a problem with the graphics card drivers, I had the same problem since 10.6.3 snow leopard all the way to current 10.6.7, I replaced the graphic driver files with old 10.6.2 drivers now it works perfect again.
It really annoys me that I had to fix it myself.

Comment #10.1 by: CR on 31 Aug 2011, 14:57 GMT

Did you have the ATI4850 in an iMac config? Am having serious graphics card looking issues here. I have a clean install of lion on a late 2009 iMac with12gb rm2TB HDD 27" iMac.
It doesn't seem toallow me to install "old" drivers over the clean lion install. How did you do it? Thanks. CR

Comment #10.2 by: Dissipointed Lion User on 27 Oct 2011, 15:37 GMT

interesting. I had not though of the graphics card drivers. I notice the crashes are mostly while on line viewing videos. Also, cannot restart without unplugging my time machine external hard drive each time.
It would be nice if our friends at apple would fix this soon. I do not know how to replace driver files. I was beginning to think I bought a Microsoft product and installed it in error. ;)

Comment #10.3 by: THEQ92 on 10 Feb 2012, 20:43 GMT

Same as below. Late 2009 iMac 27". Computer has been getting progressively worse since my second try at installing Lion. First try I thought I could upgrade, computer became totally useless, not a chance of a getting anything done. After a fresh install lion seemed to be alright... for about a day, since the freezes have been getting progressively worse. I too would love to know how to switch those drivers, I'm beginning to get desperate.
Thanks

I've been experiencing random crashes as well. I've had four in the last 24 hours.

Terrible .. Crash after crash and I use the mac for my living ! Jobs may be worth $75 billion but he is getting rich from selling duff kit . I NEVER had any problems like this with PC and I really will have to go back to PC, at the very least we should all get our money back . Ian

I just got a bread new Mac Pro with Lion 10.7 already installed -- no new apps on it yet, no files added from me, not even e-mail set up -- and discovered this awful problem. Yes, it IS Apple's responsibility. Fortunately, on the above Apple Discussion thread you mentioned, one member just said he got 10.7.1 and it solved his problem. We shall see..

Comment #13.1 by: lcs on 22 Aug 2011, 13:40 GMT

I upgraded to 10.7.1. It still is giving me the "black screen"

Have a brand new MBP with lion - same issue here, the screen goes black and doesn't wake up

Comment #15 by: Chas on 23 Aug 2011, 12:51 UTC reply to this comment

Same black screen problem. Also think my almost-new MacBook Pro is slower since the upgrade, hangs more often. Not good.

Comment #16 by: Derol on 24 Aug 2011, 20:20 UTC reply to this comment

No black screen, but becomes un responsive twice a day. And, that's on a brand new 15" MacBook Pro that's only 4 months old.

Comment #17 by: Andy on 25 Aug 2011, 12:14 UTC reply to this comment

This is the worst upgrade I have ever seen from Apple and I have been a Mac user since 1984. I can't get anything to work for any length of time. There doesn't seem to be any help and there is no easy way I see to go back to Snow Leopard.

Comment #18 by: Sarah on 29 Aug 2011, 23:06 UTC reply to this comment

I'm unhappy with the upgrade. Lion didn't have that many new features, and my computer crashes multiple times a day. It's very frustrating, I rely on my computer for so many of my classes.

Comment #19 by: ltan on 02 Sep 2011, 09:41 UTC reply to this comment

Same here, black screen appears generally when running videos

Comment #20 by: Rbad on 12 Sep 2011, 18:48 UTC reply to this comment

My MAC is only eight months old. We bought the biggest and best in the store. Had no issues with Leopard. Installed the Lion upgrade last night and the system crashed. Tech at that Apple store tried to tell me that I did something wrong. I just about lost my mind. Especially when I see these posts that Lion has issues. Had I known this, I would have waited to upgrade to Lion until Apple figured out how to fix this!!

Bought a new MacBook Air with Lion. It crashes several times a day, which is quite bothersome. My love for Apple is rapidly decreasing!

Pulling my hair out with this issue!!! I use my mac professionally, and this issue make me look like a buffoon. ugh.

Just upgraded to lion, would not reboot immediately, finally did and then totally crashed. Apple store would not help and sent me elsewhere to try to retrieve data. Macbookpro just over a year old

Comment #29 by: Martin on 15 Oct 2011, 08:40 UTC reply to this comment

worse than Vista! Factory installed Lion crashes multiple times per day. NOt a black screen but freeze and loud beeps. Or the screen just freezes with some graphics crap in purple.

Comment #30 by: David on 24 Oct 2011, 14:14 UTC reply to this comment

My MacBook Pro "black screened" frequently. I took it to the Apple Genius Bar and they said the logic board needed to be replaced. After this repair, the black screen did not reappear but I had a problem with the screen and keys randomly "freezing." Shutting down and rebooting was the only option. I took it back to Apple who said it did not appear to be a hardware problem. I have tried various browsers and repairing permissions but the problem still occurs without a consistent pattern. David

Old news, even after "reloading" Lion and going to 10.7.2, OS still crashes with no apparent link as to why...Very random. So, to get some work done I've gone back to SL. I have an 08' Mac Pro, 8 Ram. I've been troubleshooting longer than should be expected.

Comment #32 by: Dissipointed Lion User on 27 Oct 2011, 15:30 UTC reply to this comment

I upgraded to Lion on one of my machines and regret doing it because of the endless crashes I am experiencing. I have found that if I keep my external drive for time machine unplugged then it works fine. But I need the back up.
I work for a large company on the front line with direct customer exposure. On occasion I engage customers in conversation as part of my sales. Sometimes Apple comes up when common treads turn conversion in different directions. I have advised folks and will continue to advise not to upgrade until Apple fixes this issue.

Comment #33 by: bryanall on 05 Nov 2011, 00:32 UTC reply to this comment

I have recently upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro 2.66Ghz. This morning have had 6 screen freezes in 2 hours. I'm also getting the 'black screen" issue. I have had to buy a new scanner, the previous one was only around 6 years old but Canon say it's not new enough for Lion. After downloading several different Canoscan Toolbox drivers I still can't get the scanner to operate from the dock. Only by doing it manually from the scanner buttons. Thinking of reverting to Snow Leopard until Apple get it sorted.

Same thing happening to me after upgrading yesterday. About 5 black screens in less than 24 hours. If I wait about a minute the password box will come up and I don't lose anything except time.

Comment #38 by: Homer on 18 Dec 2011, 14:05 UTC reply to this comment

Lion has been a disaster. My iMac crashes very 6 minutes or so. Nothing works. I have had it. Its time to wipe the hard drive and to reinstall Snow Leopard - it worked.

Comment #39 by: Dave on 17 Jan 2012, 07:54 UTC reply to this comment

I totally agree. I have reinstalled Lion 4 times, the last time I had the apple store do the install themselves and it still hasn't fixed Lion from just randomly crashing. I'm about to go back to my PC.

Comment #40 by: Clarke on 20 Jan 2012, 06:34 UTC reply to this comment

I have a Macbook Air, purchased in December 2011. Several time now the screen has gone black, after pressing some keys it comes back. I have been plugged in when this happens. Don't know what to make of it. I'm running 10.7.2

Comment #41 by: ibanks on 24 Jan 2012, 02:55 UTC reply to this comment

I upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard, and Lion crashes as much as Windows 98. Lion is truly the worst operating system I have every used, and I've used some bad ones (Windows Millenium and Windows 98, to name two that still weren't as crash-prone as Lion). My computer has crashed and required me to UNPLUG its power source three times today, and this is nothing unusual. I loved Snow Leopard, but after this my next computer will not be a Mac.

Comment #42 by: Troubled on 03 Feb 2012, 10:55 UTC reply to this comment

I just bought a 21 inch Imac two days ago. It has 10.7.2 installed. I experienced the shut down and black screen during registration. It just happened to me again while playing a flash game. I'm very upset to find out this is an ongoing issue with Imac. This is my first Mac. Go figure.

Comment #43 by: DaveD on 23 Feb 2012, 21:32 UTC reply to this comment

I was getting freezes and black screens multi-times per day. Then, a few weeks ago, I messed around with completely erasing the disk and reinstalling the latest update from Time Machine. I have had very few problems since then. If I do have a freeze or a black screen now, it is ALWAYS after having spent a lot of time watching videos on YouTube. Still frustrating but it's progress.

My new Macbook functioned perfectly until the the last two updates. Now, on closing the lid, upon opening the password screen comes up, then goes black. Tried a variety of things and the only solution I have found so far is to force a reboot. I found new updates today, fingers crossed...

I am a new Mac convert and have a 1 month old Macbook Pro running on Lion only and in the last two days, following the latest autoupdate I am getting 2 or 3 black screen or frozen screen crashes a day. Not at all satisfactory, and wordse than the problems that drove me from Microsoft PCs
