Make a FaceTime audio-only call from a Mac to an iPhone, or vice versa

Apple has begun testing the latest Mavericks update internally, and while the seed note appears to disclose all the focus areas, developers are signaling the inclusion of a new feature which Apple has been reluctant to mention in the release papers.

According to people familiar with OS X 10.9.2 Build 13C32, the first beta in this new development cycle, Apple’s Mavericks operating system is about to get a brand new audio calling feature. It’s called FaceTime Audio, and it stems from iOS 7.

To make a FaceTime audio-only call on iOS, users simply launch FaceTime, tap Contacts, and choose the person they’d like to call. Then, in the FaceTime section, the user taps the Phone icon to make an audio-only call using FaceTime, which doesn’t tax your monthly carrier plan, and instead routes the call through the web.

Developers with a paid subscription at the Mac Dev Center can immediately download OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and give FaceTime Audio a try right now.
