Cloud service emails customers with instructions to update

Released a couple of months ago with much fanfare, Yosemite suffers from a bug that affects Dropbox installations and cloud sync. In fact, it affects many other apps as well, but at least Dropbox is taking some steps.

In an email to OS X users, Dropbox acknowledges that version 10.10 of the operating system, aka Yosemite, suffers from a flaw that affects certain applications. The issue has been rectified in the interim, but users need to take a few steps on their own to address the problem on their respective computers.

The email in question addresses each user in part by their name, followed by a brief disclosure of the flaw in question and the steps to take in order to address the situation.

“We’re reaching out to let you know about an issue in Apple’s new OS X Yosemite that causes problems with Dropbox,” says the company. “You can resolve this issue by installing the latest Software Update for OS X Yosemite.”

The cloud storage supplier elaborates, noting that “OS X Yosemite may occasionally cause some programs to crash when you open, save-as, or first save a file. These crashes are rare but happen when an application, such as Dropbox, uses Yosemite’s official Finder integration — and if that program crashes because of this interaction, unsaved changes may be lost.”

Apple changed the Save As behavior in its desktop operating system years ago, when OS X Lion debuted, to many users’ dismay.

Dropbox says that, in order to fix the issue described in the above paragraphs, all the user needs to do is download and install OS X 10.10.1, the first maintenance update for Yosemite released earlier this week.

“To fix this issue, Apple has released OS X Update 10.10.1. This update is available for free in the Mac App Store,” says Dropbox, directing customers to support document HT201541, which contains comprehensive instructions on how to update OS X and App Store apps on a Mac.

What’s new in OS X 10.10.1

In case you’re wondering what else is inside the 10.10.1 update, you’ll be glad to know that it might fix some Wi-Fi problems, email bugs, Back to My Mac, Notification center, and even some security issues.

The most burning issue in Yosemite has been poor Wi-Fi connectivity, and at least some users are reporting that the update has failed to address the problem.

However, other flaws – like the Notification Center amnesia bug – have been successfully thwarted by the new build.
