Chinese mobile phone maker OPPO is reportedly getting ready for the launch of a successor of its OPPO R1 smartphone, that went official in December last year, and might unveil it as soon as April 25.

The new device, supposedly called OPPO R1S, is expected to include some additional connectivity capabilities when compared to its predecessor, namely support for 4G LTE networks.

The OPPO R1 is a great device, featuring a thin, 7.1mm body, but cannot provide users with download speeds better than those granted by 3G networks today.

According to the latest reports on the matter, however, the upcoming R1S handset will change that, which should make it a great option for mobile phone users in China, since 4G LTE networks are just picking up pace in the country.

Other changes will also be observed in the new device when compared to its predecessor, starting with the 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset that will be present inside it.

As GizChina points out, the original OPPO R1 was released with a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor inside, this being the main reason for which it did not come up with 4G capabilities.

Apparently, the upcoming R1S is set to provide users with support not only for global 4G LTE frequencies in China, but also for international ones, which suggests that OPPO might actually release it in other markets out there as well, UnwiredView notes.

The new mobile phone is also said to feature 2GB of RAM, a nice upgrade over the 1GB of RAM available inside the original. Moreover, the handset should sport a 13-megapixel camera on the back, up from the 8MP one in the original.

The rest of the device’s hardware specs should be similar to those present in the OPPO R1, and the outer design should be the same too, it seems. In fact, a teaser image showing that is available online now.

What remains to be seen is which flavor of the Android operating system will be loaded on top of this handset. With Android 4.4.2 KitKat already available for about half a year now, chances are that OPPO will adopt it for the new smartphone, though an official confirmation on this has yet to be provided.

As mentioned above, the handset is expected to become official on April 25, when OPPO should announce it for the Chinese market, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
