The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project has shipped the first 10 units of its final product with more to come in the following weeks. All things considered, this is
a fine idea coupled with a low price so it should do well in Third World countries. The only problem is that it will actually cost $25 higher than projected taking it to a total of $125 instead of $100.
Last week, guys at MIT showed the first pictures with the notebook. Now the products are shipping and it seems that 900 units will be introduced in the beginning of 2007. The projected price is said to fall back to $100 while new series will arrive in the stores with millions waiting to be build if the market demands it. First OLPC laptops are said to be used especially by programmers and also in educational programs.
The OLPC project is financially supported by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation which has already pumped several millions in the deal. The laptops are manufactured by Quanta and use an AMD CPU. As you can seem this project could make a lot of people happy. But living up to your name is not as easy as it seems, especially if you take into account the failure of PIC. Let's hope that this plan will actually work.
