OJ Simpson Does It Again

Holiday in Vegas...with an OJ twist

Once a murderer always a murderer, they say. And while I personally believe this to be rather unfair, there are tiny, little daily reminders (such as this O.J. Simpson news item) that encourage me to either take a hint and realize I've grown weak and soft, or reconsider my trusting views regarding human nature, truth and goodness. Just imagine. Despite the fact that the whole planet believes he is a murderer, despite being left disgraced and penniless, despite being unanimously booed for his intention to publish a book called "If I Did It"...he still fancies himself quite the sleek, smart character and tries to pull off a stunt he probably saw in a James Bond movie.

O.J., it seems, turned private investigator (devious, right?) and decided to act on a tip-off received from a sports memorabilia dealer, who called some weeks ago and warned him that some sports collectors were in possession of a lot of things that used to belong to him and are desperately trying to sell them. Simpson then went undercover in Las Vegas and (under the cover story that he's attending a friend's wedding) reportedly made arrangements to meet the dealer who had tipped him off at the Palace Station hotel.

What happened next is still unclear - but the latest information points towards the fact that Simpson may have tried to sneak into the room of the people who allegedly held his things and repossess them. But the former American football legend denies the break-in. "Everybody knows this is stolen stuff", Simpson stated for a wire service in a slightly defensive tone. "Not only wasn't there a break-in, but [the dealer] came to the lobby and escorted us up to the room. In any event, it's stolen stuff that's mine. Nobody was roughed up".

Well, this may be the case - but I have to wonder, what was in O.J.'s head when he tried to pull off this little stunt? I guess he never learned the whole "stealing from a thief is still stealing" routine. I doubt this comes as news for him, but he really doesn't need any more trouble, more police attention and definitely could use less bad publicity. Somehow, I have a feeling we haven't found out all the sordid details of this little O.J. run-in - so stay tuned and we'll keep you posted.
