14 DAY TRIAL // Well-known SSD developer and manufacturer OCZ is reportedly preparing to launch a slim line of SSDs as part of the Vertex 3 family. The new series will be suggestively called “Vertex 3 Low Profile.”
The new series will have four members and these will offer capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB.
As the only differences are the slimmer aluminum case and probably a slightly updated firmware version, these SDDs should be a very good upgrade option for laptops that can only fit a 7 mm drive in the HDD bay.
The standard read and write specifications are the same: 550 MB/s when reading and 500 MB/s when writing.
Buyers should keep in mind that these are SandForce based drives so the real life speeds are considerably slower than what’s theoretically achievable with an new and empty drive.
If you want a SSD that will do its best in any situation, you should look up the Vertex 4 line, Crucial’s M4 SSDs or Plextor’s new SSD line that all use Marvell controllers.
