It seems that OCZ's research into solid state storage is paying off in more ways than one. Just days ago, a short while after it stopped making peripherals, coolers and systems, the company came out and showed off its second-generation Z-Drive R2 PCI Express SSDs (bootable). Now, the consumer-aimed Vertex and Agility series have also reincarnated, as the Vertex 2 and Agility 2, and are ready to drive system performance upwards.

As end-users would expect from next-generation products, the Agility 2 and Vertex 2 bring about a set of operational optimizations. Their use of the 2.5-inch form factor and the SATA 3.0Gbps interface ensure their compatibility with most current computing platforms, mobile or otherwise, while their new controller design leads to higher data transfer rates.

The Vertex 2 are meant for the more enthusiastic of customers, with 4KB random writes up to 50,000IOPS and their read and write speeds of 285MB/s and 275MB/s, respectively. The Agility 2, on the other hand, will be more affordable and, while having identical transfer rates, will deliver 4KB random writes up to 10,000 IOPS.

“OCZ’s original Vertex Series of solid state drives have become a top seller due to the product’s exceptional performance and reliability,” said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology Group. “The new Vertex 2 and Agility 2 SSD lines continue that tradition by incorporating the latest controller and firmware technology. They are an excellent solution for customers who are looking for improved transfer rates and best-in-class input/output per second (IOPS) for a wide range of uses, ranging from entertainment to workstation and tier 2 storage applications. Additionally, this new product line highlights our continuing determination to be the market leader in the high reliability memory and flash-based storage market.”

The OCZ Vertex 2 and Agility 2 Series of solid state drives come in capacities of 50GB, 100GB, 200GB and even 400GB. They support ATA TRIM, are backed by a three-year warranty and should become available in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, prices were not revealed in the press release.
