A little more than a week ago, OCZ shared with us some preliminary performance data about its upcoming Octane SSD based on a in-house developed Indilinx Everest controller and now the first benchmark of the drive made its appearance online.

The bench comes courtesy of the AnadTech website which has received an Octane sample from OCZ and it details its average data rate performance in comparison with a series of other high-performance SSDs on the market today.

If we were to judge by this test it seems like the Indilinx Everest controller can do more than just hold its own against the drives based on SandForce SSF-2281 SSD processors like the OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS or the Kingston HyperX.

In fact, the difference between these three drives seems to be only marginal as the Octane manages to achieve an average data rate of 207MB/s while the pack leader, Kingston's HyperX SSD, outperforms it by just 10MB/s.

More results should be available tomorrow when AnandTech publishes its review of the OCZ Octane, but these numbers seem to suggest that SandForce may finally get some competition in the SSD market.

Of course that it all depends on the reliability of the drive, but fortunately for us OCZ seems to have learned from its lessons and took its time to put the Octane through some additional tests before releasing it (the Octane launch was initially scheduled for November 1st).

When it becomes available, the Octane will sell in two different versions one a 3Gbps version of the Indilinx Everest controller and async NAND while the second will pack a 6Gbps SATA interface and sync NAND Flash.

Capacities will start at 128GB and can go all the way up to 1TB while the memory chips found inside are built by IMFT.

Pricing wasn't unveiled but more info should be available tomorrow so make sure to keep an eye on Softpedia News to find out more about the Indilinx Everest-powered OCZ Octane SSD.
