Overclocking specialist OCZ Technology premiered world's first 4 GB DDR3 memory kit running at 2000 MHz. According to the company, the new memory solution comes in 2 x 2 GB modules built with high-density DDR3 chips and primarily targets ultra-high-end desktop solutions for both gaming and high-performance computing applications.
The new memory products join the OCZ Platinum family, and deliver blistering clock speeds for unmatched performance. Moreover, thanks to its innovative thermal control technology, the new product is extremely suitable for computing enthusiasts who are into overclocking.
"OCZ Technology pulled off this seemingly impossible task with the release of the world's fastest high-density memory solution", said Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology Development at OCZ Technology. "The new OCZ DDR3 PC3-16000 Platinum Edition kits combine two 2GB modules for 4GB system density running at 9-9-9 latencies and a record-breaking 2GHz data rate. All of this is achieved at only 1.9V which falls well within the voltage tolerances of any DDR3 memory controller currently on the market", he continued.
According to the company, every 2 GB DDR3 module is manually tested to ensure maximum compliance for a truly professional dual-channel kit. The modules are also stressed under high workload as part of the quality assurance process.
The memory modules are equipped with XTC (Xtreme Thermal Convection) heatspreaders that efficiently dissipate the residual heat from the high-speed DRAM chips, thus ensuring optimal performance even when overclocked. The XTC design enhances the airflow and forces it into the "dead air space" inside the heatspreader.
OCZ will also perform a capacity update on the PC3-14400 Platinum Series that will increase their capacity to 4 GB. However, in order to take full advantage of the whole 4 GB, the host computer must run a 64-bit operating system.
The company did not disclose additional details about pricing and availability, but the new memory kits are expected to kick in later this month. Since it is a professional product, expect it to come with a significant price tag.
