While DDR3 memory modules are just starting to gain a foothold on the computer memory market, the older but still popular DDR2 standard gets a new high performance addition for the well-known high end computer hardware manufacturer OCZ. The company just announced the launch of a new Reaper memory modules series based on the DDR2 memory that comes with the standard heat pipe design specific to the Reaper family.
The new PC2-6400
Reaper HPC CL3 series are certified to work at the 800MHz frequency and they are tested for compliance against Nvidia's Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP for short), which allows these memory modules to run on reduced timings and achieve superior performance. The low timings memory modules will be available in kits of 2GB made of two 1024MB modules that are hand tested for perfect compatibility in dual channel configurations and they come of course with a lifetime warranty.
Because of the programmable SPD circuit that is integrated into the Reaper memory series they are able to boot with preselected frequencies and timings on the latest Nvidia SLI enabled chipsets. Even if the Reaper series is designed for gamers and power users the presence of the programmable SPD circuit and the compatibility with the EPP eliminates the burden of manual configuration and optimization. As the Reaper memory modules were initially aimed at overclockers they come equipped with a cooling system based on a heat pipe design made of copper and an aluminum compact fin array placed on top of the module.
The OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 memory modules comes with low timings from factory like the default CL3 setting or the general 3-4-4-15 CAS -TRCD -TRP -TRAS latencies that are below the latencies commonly found even on other gaming aimed DDR2 memory modules. The Reaper series needs a nominal 2.1V at normal latencies and frequency but in order to achieve better stabilities at a higher that rated frequency or when using lower latencies the voltage can be increased to 2.4V without the fear of damaging the memory chips thanks to the high performance cooling solution employed by OCZ.
