Redesigned heatspreaders and liquid cooling solutions

OCZ has just announced its Flex 2 series of memory modules, especially targeted at high-performance and enthusiast markets. The new products allow the company to surpass the speed barriers of the DDR2 memory and take gaming to a new level.

The Flex 2 memory runs at a dazzling speed of 1150 MHz, a clock frequency that is relatively troublesome to achieve because of the huge amounts of residual heat. Normal memory modules clocked at such speeds would usually meet their creator in an instant, as the tiny transistors would pop under the huge temperature.

"One of the side effects of extreme memory speeds is an increase in performance robbing heat, and the new Flex II modules are among the most powerful memory solutions in the market place yet are able to remain cool and stable with an innovative new cooling design," commented Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology Development at OCZ Technology.

In order to fight the shortcomings related to overheating, OCZ would use a new thermal management solution based on water. While liquid cooling solutions are more expensive than the air-based ones, they can easily dissipate enormous amounts of heat, allowing for better overclocking.

Beyond the liquid-cooling solution, OCZ also included new, redesigned heatspreaders with integrated liquid injection systems, that are seated exactly on top of the DDR2 memory chips. However, users that would rather not have a tank full of water inside their precious gaming rig, can do without, thanks to the heatspreaders' thick and dense fin arrays.

"The thermal power is addressed using what we believe is the most advanced memory cooling solution currently available, suited for either liquid or air cooling system configuration to unleash the full power of 4 GB of DDR2 at the highest possible frequency," Schuette continued.

OCZ will release its highly-optimized PC2-9200 Flex II memory modules in high-capacity 4GB (2?2048MB) dual channel kits. There is no word on pricing or availability as of the moment of writing.
