The carrier also acknowledges the scale of the update

A few weeks ago, Microsoft kicked off the rollout of the Lumia Cyan platform upgrade to the owners of Nokia Lumia handsets around the world, though only a small number of users have received it until now.

The update, which brings along the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, has been released on unlocked Lumia 625 and Lumia 925 phones in the beginning, but has started emerging on other devices and on carrier-branded handsets only recently.

As it turns out, Microsoft is the one that has to flip the switch on the update, and as soon as that happens, more devices out there will receive the update, regardless of whether they own unlocked smartphones or carrier-branded ones.

This is what UK wireless carrier O2 revealed in a blog post update on August 1, meant to shed some light on why the update is not available on Lumia phones on its network as of now.

“Unfortunately many of the 8.1 updates had been slightly delayed in being pushed out to customers - this impacts all networks across all countries,” the wireless carrier explains.

“It's important to understand that O2 have already approved all of the 8.1 updates which are sitting with Nokia - at this stage, there's little we can do to speed up the process as the last part of the equation is for the update to be released to customers.”

However, the carrier also notes that it’s actually understandable for Microsoft / Nokia to delay the release of Lumia Cyan for some smartphones, considering the fact that they need to push slightly different updates to devices, depending on market and carrier.

“This spans across all network, all countries & all continents that Nokia operate in - it's a very important update for Nokia and their users so they want to get this right and ensure all updates go out as planned without any issues,” the wireless carrier notes.

Additionally, O2 UK explains that they have already discussed the matter with Nokia, and that the update might start arriving on Lumia phones on its network sooner rather than later.

Users might see the update being pushed to them late next week, yet there is a chance that it will be delayed once again. According to the carrier, users should keep in mind the scale at which Microsoft has to operate when deploying the Lumia Cyan update.

One other thing that the operator has revealed is the fact that owners of Nokia Lumia 930, Lumia 630, and Lumia 635 phones will be provided with a maintenance update very soon, aimed at providing them with Visual Voicemail.
