Wireless carrier O2 UK has just announced that they would be delaying the launch of Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY smartphone due to the fact that there are some issues with the software on this device.

According to a recent post on the carrier's blog, the Xperia PLAY smartphone, one of the most expected devices of the quarter, won't become available for purchase on its airwaves on April 1st, as initially announced, but at a later, unknown date.

“We’ve been testing the phone non-stop for weeks and have found some bugs in the software that, if they’re not fixed, means customers won’t have a great experience,” Stuart Hibberd, head of O2’s testing team, notes on the company's blog.

“We’ve been working with Sony Ericsson to get these bugs ironed out, but haven’t been able to get them fixed in time for us to be able to launch the phone on April 1st as we originally planned,” he continues.

No specific release date for the handset was offered, but it seems that both the white and the black flavor of the device would share the same fate.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the white version of Xperia PLAY was meant to become available for purchase exclusively at O2 starting with the next week.

According to O2, they want to make sure that there would be no issues with the new device when it goes on sale on the carrier's network, this being the main reason for which they decided to delay the handset.

“Sometimes we discover bugs and issues on a phone. This is perfectly normal – bugs can appear in every form of software. When we discover these issues we work with our phone manufacturer partners to fix them and make sure that O2 customers will have the best possible experience when they use their phone,” the aforementioned blog post explains.

O2 already put the Xperia PLAY on a Coming Soon page on their website, and those interested in registering to receive updates on the phone's arrival should head there for that.
