UK mobile phone carrier O2 now has a new special offer in place for its customers interested in the purchase of a new handset running under Google's Android operating system, with both Sony Ericsson Xperia arc and the Samsung Galaxy S listed for free on monthly plans starting at £16.50 per month.

Those who would like to take advantage of this special offering should know that they will have to commit to a 24-month contract. They should make the purchase before 12.00pm on Sunday night to qualify for the promotion, it seems.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc and the Samsung Galaxy S can be seen listed on the wireless carrier's website here and here, respectively.

The said £16.50 plan will bring them 50 call minutes and 250 text messages per month, along with 500MB of data.

Undoubtedly, the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc seems the most appealing deal of the two. Packing a fast 1GHz application processor and a 4.2-inch touchscreen display, the handset runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

It was unveiled in January this year, with an 8MP camera on the back, microSD memory card slot (up to 32GB), WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities, built-in GPS receiver, and a slim body.

“The Xperia arc combines cutting edge design with the ultimate in Sony technology. The crystal clear images are provided by Sony's award winning Exmor R technology,” O2 notes.

“Capture the highest quality images and HD video even in low light conditions and Android 2.3 keep everything running smoothly.”

The Samsung Galaxy S was one of the most popular smartphones of the last year. Launched with a fast 1GHz application processor inside, the handset runs under Android 2.2 Froyo, though it should receive an update to the new Gingerbread OS soon.

The handset also comes with a 5-megapixel photo snapper, 8GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities, GPS receiver, and support for Google Mobile services, as well as for applications available for download via the Android Market.

“With a 1GHz processor and the Android (Froyo) 2.2 OS, the Samsung Galaxy S runs multiple apps with ease. The 4" Super AMOLED screen delivers HD playback and recording, plus Swype for faster messaging,” O2 states.
