O.J. Simpson is now serving time in prison for a botched 2007 robbery attempt, when he tried to steal sports memorabilia that once belonged to him. Just recently, he was caught stealing again: this time, oatmeal cookies in the prison he calls home.

The former football player is now serving time at the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada and, according to a report in the latest print issue of the National Enquirer, he almost got away with stealing forbidden items, Radio Fox News reports.

This story coming from the Enquirer means that it’s best taken with a grain of salt.

As per unnamed “insiders,” guards noticed that Simpson had taken something and hidden it under his prison outfit, so they pulled him outside and started a thorough search.

One can only imagine their surprise when they found he’d crammed so many cookies inside his shirt, and not concealed some dangerous weapon or perhaps a cell phone.

“O.J. just stood there with a goofy grin on his face as the guard kept digging inside his shirt and throwing the cookies on the floor,” says the spy.

“The temptation of the cookies in the prison chow line was too much for him,” adds the insider for the celebrity tabloid.

Even while a craving for sweets is perfectly understandable, the fact that Simpson’s cell mates thought he was hiding something else made them crack up when they saw the cookies.

Nay, they “nearly fell over” from laughter when they saw the guards pull them out of his shirt, the report notes.

Admittedly, the incident ended with the guards letting Simpson off with a warning, even though they initially wanted to write him up.

Because the story seemed a bit too good to be true, the LA Times wanted to get to the bottom of it and find out whether there’s any truth to it. As it turns out, there isn’t because the public information officer for the Nevada Department of Corrections is denying he was ever caught stealing cookies, oatmeal or otherwise.
