Hardware enthusiasts will have yet another pair of letters to make use of with the advent of the new GeForce 8800 GS from Nvidia and XFX. The new graphics card sports 384MB of RAM and seems to be comparable
to a 640MB standard 8800 GTS video adapter.

However, it is neither a GTS, nor a GT, but, instead, it is a mix of the two breeds. Nvidia has unveiled it quietly, but it was XFX to trumpet the arrival of two PCI-Express 2.0 cards based on the new GPU. The Geforce 8800 GS is a G92 graphics processor to feature a 192-bit memory interface. Both XFX cards will come with 384 GB of GDDR3 and the mentioned 192-bit memory interface. The video cards will sport a single slot-cooler, just like any regular model of 8800 GT.

The 8800 GS comes rigged with 96 stream processors and the XFX cards will come in two GPU clock flavors: the factory-default 580MHz GPU and the substantially overclocked version to work at 680MHz core speed. The GDDR3 memory clock will be 700MHz (1.4GHz effective) for the standard version, while the overclocked edition will sport a GDDR3 clock of 800MHz (1.6GHz effective) .

According to XFX, the GS video cards will be capable of the "same gaming feats of grandeur as a standard XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB graphics card". XFX's models are an interesting cocktail of hardware specifications, as the new GPU has fewer stream processors than the 8800 GT, yet it comes with more graphics memory than a cheaper 256MB 8800 GT.

The regular edition of the 8800 GS is available immediately for as much as $267, while the overclocked version can be purchased for a higher, $297 price tag. We hope that there will be enough units on the retailers' shelves as the price seems to be more than fine for these specs. At the same time, the XFX cards will compete with AMD's Radeon 3850 that come with a similar price tag.
