Nvidia Trumpets Death of the CPU

Nvidia hits back at Intel in a private e-mail message

The recent conflict between Intel and Nvidia moved from the market to the personal arena, where the two competitors are throwing offenses at will. The latest hit comes from one of Nvidia's vice-presidents, in a private e-mail message
claiming that the CPU is dead and has long since run out of steam.

The private mail message was intercepted by tech website Inquirer, and holds Roy Tayler's opinions regarding Intel's central processors. The letter is dated April 10, but the final recipient is currently unknown.

"Basically the CPU is dead. Yes, that processor you see advertised everywhere from Intel. It's run out of steam. The fact is that it no longer makes anything run faster. You don't need a fast one anymore. This is why AMD is in trouble and it's why Intel are panicking," Tayler claimed in the message.

"They are panicking so much that they have started attacking us. This is because you do still [need] one chip to get faster and faster - the GPU. That GeForce chip. Yes honestly. No I am not making this up. You are my friends and so I am not selling you. This s*** is just interesting as hell," he continued.

However, Nvidia claims that the above message does not reflect any official stance whatsoever. According to the company's spokesman Brian Burke, the message is not a public statement and "the views in Roy Tayler's e-mail do not mirror the views of Nvidia."

It might be true that the e-mail message reflects Tayler's own opinions, yet, the company stated a while ago that "you need nothing beyond the most basic CPU," in order to get things done. This means that Nvidia thinks that the CPU might not be dead yet, but it's just one step closer to its grave.

Intel, of course, completely disagrees with Nvidia's allegations. It couldn't be otherwise, given the fact that the company is at the moment the biggest CPU manufacturer in the world and its CPU business accounts for the lion's share of the revenue.

"We believe that both a great CPU and great graphics are important in a PC. Any PC purchase - including the capability level of components inside it - is a decision that each user must make based on what they will be doing with that PC," said Intel spokesperson Dan Snyder.

it seems not to be true what it has been said about this conflict..because i own an acer aspire M5500 which runs a Dual Core processor(1.8) and a Nvidia 7200SE and i experience total harmony on multi-tasks especially games! it's not true-as a personnal point of view-that intel won't increase the capabily of its processors because the performance of P4 is below the one of a Core Duo or Quad Core..
I think that the speech of this man springs from personnal commercial interests!..

yeah biggest my ass... how about amd.. while intel was pumpin up speed amd were changing their processors architecture to cut dead times, thus eliminating bottlenecks. let's not forget amd64x2 was after all the first desktop dualcore. but they are right if they are to advance anymore they have to rethink the whole CPU architecture and implement some of the latest advances in semiconductor phisics that are avilable right now.

Obviously CPU is running out of date.....

If a GPU can make so much algorith in terms of Maths to provide output..... So why Nvidia cant make their own NPU (N for Nvidia)...

If Nvidia acquired Ageia PhysX and incorporated it in their GPUs.... and AMD incorporated RV 670 based GPU in its processors...... SO NVIDIA can implement GPU CPU PPU........ All in one..... Just think guys....nforce...geforce....SLI.....Gelato...Cuda..... and what about Intel???

I'm just making a debate......after all.....

oh! wuoah.. oh..
This is going to be fun!
The more competition, the more killer GPUs and CPUs!!

Oops, my bad..
I'm just being excited.

Yeah but Intel extreme is faster than celeron, and new and improved CPU save more energy ( making less energy bills), has more security, better performance, and more stability. And the new operating systems probably won't work with an CPU from a few years ago. And without a CPU the computer won't work at all, and it's more important than a graphics card, not for gamers, but without the CPU how will u play your game?

I still upgrade both though.

like in April of 2007 i heard that (it could have been just a rumor) in 2010 there was going to b a new technology
32 core processors

i belive that the future will be with paralel archtecture.... I belive that multi core processors are being slowed down by their data buses, because, think of it, you may have the biggest castle, it matters also how large are the doors.

Paralel computers are quite a nighmare for programmers, but slowly, because of multi-core technologies, they will be able to program them.... The CPU vs GPU fight has a source in General Sollution vs Particular Sollution fight... so nobody will win, because there is the need for specialised processing as is need for general one. I want to see any computer boot up via Cuda. When they do this one they'll see what i mean.

Sorry if my english is that bad....

Huh? Haven't most or all of you missunderstood this e-mail? He is essentially saying that todays CPU's are so good that they are not taxed by todays games and software. GPu's however are, it could be argued that this is because the requirement for graphics power is increasing, but it could also be argued that Intels R&D has outsripped Nvidias so much that no matter what CPU or graphics card you have the graphics card will always be the bottleneck.

This is hardly an attack on intels job performance if anything a complement, but they rightly point out that Intel may have done themselves out of a job. Nvidia falsely see this as an opprtunity as it means more profit in their sector and less in intels.

What they fail to see is that Intel will quickly identify that processors are becoming a cash cow and seek to dominate the increasingly profitable graphics card indusrty, again they will outsrip Nvidia in technology (economies of scale talent pre-existing patents etc) only this time as direct competitiors, thereby all but bankrupting Nvidia in a matter of years. LOL.

Not interesting for Nvidia.... TERRIFYING.
