Chip maker Nvidia is getting ready for a flurry of smartphones powered by its Tegra 3 quad-core application processor, and it is not shy to talk about it.

In fact, the company has just confirmed that it expects the number of such devices to grow up to 30, suggesting that some of them will come with low price tags.

At the company's annual investor meeting on Thursday, Nvidia GM Mike Rayfield talked about the company’s plans for the Tegra 3 chip in the smartphone segment.

He explained that 13 of the aforementioned 30 devices would arrive on shelves with a transfer price of under $300 (this is not the retail price that these phones will feature).

The numbers are impressive, especially when compared to the performance of Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chip, which made it inside smartphones in 2011.

There have been only 15 devices packing the Tegra 2 processor last year, and none of them was featuring a low cost.

Also yesterday, Nvidia announced that its Icera 410 LTE multimode data modem chipset designed for tablets and smartphones has received approvals for use on AT&T’s network.

This means that it might not be too long before the chipset makes it inside devices that could offer advanced data speeds to their users, thus becoming even more appealing than before.

This is the first Icera modem to come with 4G LTE implementation, but it is not the only one that Nvidia prepares for the smartphone segment.

In fact, the company also said that it would bring to shelves the Icera 500 chipset in the not too distant future, and that this product would be capable of far better performance than the Icera 410 chip.

The modem will be paired with the next-gen Tegra processor, codenamed Grey. Set to arrive in devices only next year, Grey will be the first integrated LTE silicon from Nvidia.
