Three new parts introduced sporting identical specs as the GPUs they replace

Just like AMD who announced just a bit earlier its “new” series of Radeon HD 7000M notebook GPUs, Nvidia has also refreshed its entry-level and midrange mobile graphics cores lineup with new GeForce 600M parts that are nothing more than a rebrand of the 500-series GPUs.

Nvidia was actually the first of the two graphics chip makers to do so, but it decided to remain silent about these updates.

Taking a look at the specs of the GPUs, which were uncovered by AnandTech, it’s not hard to see why Nvidia has decide to take this route since the “new” parts don’t even differ in clock speeds compared to the solutions they are meant to replace.

The only changes made were to the naming of the GPUs, as the GeForce GT 555M now becomes the GT 635M, the GeForce GT 540M the GT 630M, while the GeForce 520MX is now known as the 610M.

This decision was taken in order to make room for new high-end GPUs that will replace the current GTX 580M as well as the 570M and the 560M.

When these will launch however is anybody’s guess at this point in time, since traditionally Nvidia’s and AMD’s high-end mobile GPUs are actually based on the cores used for mid-range desktop graphics cards, such as the current GTX 560.

Sadly, Nvidia hasn’t disclosed any info regarding the pricing of these new GeForce 600M products, but since their model number was dropped to reflect their new position in the company’s mobile lineup we also expect these to come with lower prices.

This is definitely good news for most of us as it means that we’ll be able to get better graphics in our notebooks without having to pay more. The only bad part is that we don’t know when these notebooks will actually arrive into the market.
