Last year, Nvidia’s Tegra 3 system-on-chip (SoC) was packed inside a nice range of smartphones, though it lacked one essential feature, namely support for 4G LTE connectivity.

However, the company appears finally ready to ship LTE-enabled chips to the market, and is targeting the first quarter of the year for the commercial availability of the product.

“We have a next-generation application processor integrated with a next-generation 4G/LTE. This quarter, we hope to tape out and race it to market,” NVIDIA chief Jen-Hsun Huang reportedly said during an earnings call.

The SoC was referred to last year as Tegra Grey, supposedly based on ARM Cortex-A9 cores, the same as Tegra 3 was.

With Tegra 4 coming inside devices in the second half of the year, it remains to be seen how well Grey will fare on the already crowded market space.
