Nuvola Player, a web interface for cloud music services that runs in its own window and provides integration with a Linux desktop, has advanced to version 2.4.0.

When it comes to media players, Linux users have a wide variety of applications to choose from. Most of them provide similar functionality and the same is true for the online component. Music players usually integrate various plugins that allow their users to listen to music from online sources, but Nuvola Player tries to do something different and unique.

This is a player that focuses on the new media services that will soon replace local libraries, like Google Play or Grooveshark. You can only keep so many files on the hard disk, but an online library can hold a lot more.

Nuvola Player provides instant access to the music, shows notifications with currently playing song, uses the MPRIS interface, has docking capabilities, and integrates into the Unity launcher.

The number of changes and improvements in this latest version is quite impressive. For example, the Hide Google+ buttons feature has been removed because Google changed the code too often, service settings are now applied instantly without reload, the pause and toggle play/pause actions have been fixed, a warning about compatibility issues with desktop notifications for Chrome has been implemented, the in-page navigation buttons have been added (users will find them near the Google Play logo), and a new Logitech Media Server has been added.

Also, the support for back and forward mouse buttons has been added, the support for actionable notification in the GNOME lock screen has been fixed, the document viewer cache model of WebKit is no longer used, a build error with Vala compiler 0.24 has been fixed, the tool WebKitGtk Frame has been added for debugging WebKitGtk compatibility, and the JavaScript API has been implemented.

If you are using Ubuntu, installing the latest version of Nuvola Player is actually quite simple because the developers are providing a PPA. All you have to do is to enter these commands in a terminal (you will need to be root): sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer

When the installation has been completed, you will find the application in Unity's Dash. Keep in mind that you will need to have an online connection if you want to listen to music.
