On the day the now-retired Pope Benedict XVI was born, Sister Teresita Barajuen entered the monastery aged 19. She spent 86 years as a nun and is believed to have held the record for longest cloistered nun.

She died overnight at a Madrid monastery, aged 105, The Belfast Telegraph reports.

“Sister Maria Romero, abbess of the Buenafuente del Sistal monastery outside Madrid said that Sister Teresita Barajuen had died overnight,” the publication says.

It doesn’t offer more details about the cause of death.

Sister Teresita was a prominent figure in Spain. She often spoke about her time as a nun, explaining how she never imagined she’d become one and how she entered the monastery because her parents forced her.

In 2011, she made her first outing in 40 years, to meet Pope Benedict XVI.
