Cybercriminals are relying more and more on Visual Basic Scripting (VBS) malware to infect the computers of users from Latin America. Experts from Trend Micro have found that this type of malware accounts for 28% of the infections in the region.

The most common VBS pieces of malware are VBS_SOSYOS, VBS_JENXCUS and VBS_DUNIH.

DUNIHI and JENXCUS are both designed to allow cybercriminals to execute commands on infected systems. Experts believe that DUNIHI is actually based on JENXCUS. However, the latter can only execute 2-3 commands, while the former supports over a dozen ones.

These threats are usually distributed with the aid of spam emails.

Attacks that rely on VBS malware can be mitigated by disabling the Windows Script Host (WSH). This prevents the malicious elements from running.

Additional details and tips on how to protect a computer against VBS malware are available on Trend Micro’s blog.
