Make no mistake, everybody who deliberately chooses to call Daniel Radcliffe "Harry" rather than use the actor's true name is not doing it out of ignorance, but out of fondness. Even more than ten years after the first written "Harry Potter" installment first saw the light of day and the final book in the series ended the boy wizard's saga among us ,Muggles, the fascination of J.K. Rowling's wonderful magical universe is still going strong. So strong in fact, that it's sometimes very difficult to make a clear distinction between Daniel and Harry. There's such a distinctive trace of "Harry-ness" (if we can call it that) in all the features of the slightly older Daniel, that it's still hard for the public to set the actor and the character apart. However, as far as seeing Radcliffe in a different light is concerned, we might soon get a chance to snap out of our "Potter" stupor in a most unexpected way.

Daniel Radcliffe is set to reprise his critically acclaimed role as a disturbed, horse-worshiping teenager in one of Britain's top plays from the '70s. After a successful stint in Britain, he is set to take Broadway by storm at the beginning of this fall. Radcliffe's character, Alan Strang, is an unassuming seventeen-year-old stable boy - the only son of a timid father and a refined, religious mother - who is, however, found guilty of blinding six of his master's horses. The atmosphere of the play - which deals with such issues as religion, faith and sexuality - is altogether bizarre and frightening, with some great and unforgettable visuals. There's also the slightly insignificant detail that Radcliffe will again strip naked on stage for his part. Talk about change of perspective...

The role of the psychiatrist who takes it upon himself to treat the disturbed teenager is played by Richard Griffiths, another veteran member of the "potter" cast, whom we've seen portraying Harry's mean uncle Vernon Dursley. "It will be amazing," Radcliffe stated about his Broadway debut, "but I will be terrified because I was talking to Richard Griffiths about playing New York and he said the most stupid thing you can do is underestimate New York audiences". "Equus" begins previews Sept. 5 for a limited 22-week run at the Broadhurst Theater. The play opens Sept. 25 - Feb. 8, 2009. No idea if it's safe to recommend this play to the millions of Potter fans out there, but for the most daring of you, it's definitely a chance worth taking.
