November 2010 Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Problems Confirmed

Microsoft started rolling out the fall Xbox 360 Dashboard update yesterday, November 1st, 2010, and just after it gave the refresh the green light for users worldwide, the company also confirmed the first issues with the release.

Softpedia readers that came across my article about the new features in the Xbox 360 Dashboard update, also complained of seeing a range of problems, from the refresh failing to complete, to losing content.

The Redmond company has confirmed officially that it is aware of the glitches impacting Xbox 360 users, noting that some problems are inherent to an update of this magnitude.

“There's a ton of new functionality in this update including Zune Music, ESPN, improved voice chat quality, enhanced Family Settings, and more,” a member of the Xbox LIVE Operations team explained.

“As with any significant update like this one, some issues are bound to pop up and we're working hard to resolve them.”

According to the software giant, a couple of issues have been reported the most by gamers.

“Problems downloading the new update or new/updated applications like Zune or Netflix. There are a couple of different error messages that you might get here, and they all mean essentially the same thing - "Please Try Again",” the Xbox LIVE Operations team member added.

“Being asked to pay for content you want to download that you've previously paid for. If this happens to you, simply decline and repeat the download process. This problem is intermittent, and typically on another attempt LIVE should recognize that you already own the content and allow you to re-download it for free.”

In addition, there is another glitch that needs to be resolved: “Yes, we aware of the Avatar Editor/Marketplace issue and are working on that as well.”

Microsoft is currently hard at work, focusing on resolving the issues reported by Xbox users. There are also a number of problems sent directly to the company.

The promise from the software giant is that they will be resolved as soon as possible, and that info will be provided to customers when that happens.

I can't just watch my netflix WTF why do I pay for xbox live

Comment #1.1 by: BRAWK on 03 Nov 2010, 04:05 GMT

it won't let me watch netflix either, it keeps saying a secure connection between my tv and console has been lost. It was working fine last night with the new update but today, no it won't work. I'm almost tempted to buy a ps3, nothing but problems from microsoft ever since my first xbox 3 years ago

Comment #2.1 by: BTiLC on 11 Nov 2010, 20:41 GMT

Same problem. My PC still sees the Xbox, but my console will not see my PC video, music or picture folders anymore. Contacted Microsoft, but they have not been able to resolve the problem yet.

My 6 year old gamertag will not remain logged into LIVE when trying to access games or online content. My 4 month old gamertag has zero issues. Both gamertags are under current GOLD memberships.

ESPN and other demo download cause the console to freeze

Comment #8 by: cannibalcorpses on 02 Nov 2010, 11:29 UTC reply to this comment

i cannot join my friend on dead rising 2 co-op games now. I am using an xbox 360 and he is using a pc. i am also unable to chat with him through the service either...it connects but no audio.

Is this yet another problem to do with the new dashboard update i wonder?

Comment #9 by: Aknot on 02 Nov 2010, 11:43 UTC reply to this comment

The Interface is so bright its ridiculous, my dashboard I mean Trashboard has frozen on many times now, and whats with the NT4 look, its just plain horrible and on top of that everyone sounds like they are sitting in an oil drum when talking.

Comment #10 by: Rohan on 02 Nov 2010, 11:53 UTC reply to this comment

I'm a keen Fifa player... On the latest version of the series 'Fifa 11' they have introduced a code, enabling you to play online. After the recent dashboard update, I found that when I tried to play Fifa online, a message popped up, saying my code isn't valid or has been corrupted and it won't let me play online untill I get it back.

Comment #11 by: dave on 02 Nov 2010, 12:52 UTC reply to this comment

Whilst downloading the update my console has basically crashed with the three red rings appearing. Xbox support not helpful at all. They say it's basically a coincidence this happened.

Funny that, as i see other people have experienced the same issue.

Has anyone alse experienced this?

Comment #11.1 by: Cain on 02 Dec 2010, 03:47 GMT

Why did microsoft have to update it other than for kinect

Comment #12 by: XboxMagoo on 02 Nov 2010, 12:53 UTC reply to this comment

I would like to wipe the * drive and see if that fixes anything. Though when I try to format my 360's * drive nothing happens. I go through the steps and enter the serial number for my console and it does nothing.

Comment #13 by: Adam Jackson on 02 Nov 2010, 13:45 UTC reply to this comment

works fine for me :D

Comment #14 by: Darkrelica189 on 02 Nov 2010, 14:14 UTC reply to this comment

alot of people that I have spoken to say that this new update is quite bad, but I think that due to either them being high, or just having a hangover so bright lights hurt the eyes, personaly I am overall quite impressed and enjoy the new audio updates also, my freind would agree also as he likes to put his Mac to the headset which used to be buzzy, but now is ridiculously clear and fun to listen to. So thanks microsoft or whoever for the new update as it is quite a good one, look forward to seeing what else you guys come up with in the near future.

Comment #15 by: RIP360 on 02 Nov 2010, 14:37 UTC reply to this comment

In the middle of installing the update, fans started spinning like a jet engine then it powered off with two red lights. No issues at all up until that point, now the console is unusable.

Go here for a few posts about this issue: http://forums.xbox.com/34841219/ShowPost.aspx

What a strange "coincidence"..... :)

my friebd and i's xbox 360 is not reading any discs or playin any downloadable content me and my friends and family are considering ps3

Comment #16.1 by: Fgsfds1995 on 02 Nov 2010, 17:46 GMT

Sometimes the Xbox360 won't read discs anyway. We've had our 360 replaced about 6 times now because it wouldn't read the disc.

Comment #17 by: Jack on 02 Nov 2010, 14:50 UTC reply to this comment

New updates work like a champ for me. I hope people will be patient as small kinks get worked out. I think any change can be bad (even if it is really good)

Comment #18 by: Speedy on 02 Nov 2010, 14:57 UTC reply to this comment

The dashboard's white is too bright and it reminds me of the color settings that a computer would use for people that have really bad eyesight

Comment #18.1 by: Angeldaemon 333 on 03 Nov 2010, 03:34 GMT

it is way too bright. it has been giving me headaches, dizzyness and nausea. also i think the way the new menus scroll is causing the motion sickness i'm feeling. i have never had issues like this before, and no, i'm not hungover or on drugs. i have read plenty of other comments on forums and other sites about people having this problem too. personally i think this new update was a bad idea. couldn't they have kept the old color scheme and layout while still adding the new features? or simply just make it mandatory for kinect users? i myself dont want kinect so why should i have to suffer health issues and not play online after paying for my account just because someone couldn't tone down the color scheme and ahd to downgrade the movement of the menus? this is bad and microsoft NEEDS to resolve this somehow. i love my xbox and have spent a lot of money on accessories and games only to be told i cant play it online without feeling sick and possibly getting a seizure as a result. and no i'm not epileptic either but these things can lead to seizures. i'm disgusted with this.

Comment #19 by: HPTZ on 02 Nov 2010, 15:16 UTC reply to this comment

The kiddish/horrible dashboard is now SLOWER and jerky. Whomever thought of this new layout should be fired.

i really dont think a update was waranted-and i think you should have the choice if u want the update or not-most adult gamers will not be buying Kinect- its just copying the Wii, and as u see the wii is not selling that many games -out of all the new Kinect games -nothing has intrested me at all, im going to stick to the normal gaming and will not be updating my console -im tierd of xboxlive and there stupid rules -i will no longer be a part of live -ill be playing the call of duty on my ps3 because the new cod game has the new update right on the disc and if you turn down the update (it will not allow you to play the game)microsoft needs to stop playin god and allow people to make the choice -goodbye xbox live forever

I have last version of Xbox 360 before the famous Black "silent" one came out. It's 6 months old only. Never ever had a single issue with red rings of death or anything similar. My box worked perfectly fine. After this latest update yesterday, whole dashboard slowed down to a crawl. Unbearable!

Comment #30 by: sleepy1979 on 02 Nov 2010, 21:19 UTC reply to this comment

i was playing assassins creed 2 when all of a sudden i was logged out and my saved game was deleted off the * drive. i was working on all the feathers and only had 4 achievements left! it almost tried the same thing on my halo reach when i turned the xbox off fast enough before my stuff was erased. i have never had this problem till this update. horrible!!! sleepy1979

My Xbox wont display a picture onto my TV now. I replaced the cables and even tried a new television but all I get is a black screen with dashboard audio.

Comment #31.1 by: Xboxupdateblows on 04 Nov 2010, 03:58 GMT

Mine turns on and makes dashboard sounds but won't show picture on screen either. Replaced all cables and xbox tells me that since my warranty is expired I will need to pay $119 to get it fixed. They won't admit fault and now I'm waiting for a supervisor to call me back. My ps3 just said it needed an update and I had to think twice before trusting them...

Comment #32 by: Blaze on 02 Nov 2010, 22:00 UTC reply to this comment

The dashboard update seems to have screwed with Fable 3-- I run a gaming cafe and all customers who loaded their save files after I updated all the dashboards had their save files corrupted. This happened across numerous systems and had drives, so the update is the only connection I can draw between them.

Comment #41 by: FLEEBS on 03 Nov 2010, 01:15 UTC reply to this comment

I can't even download it, so I'm locked out of Xbox Live. I'm really annoyed.

Comment #41.1 by: Admantium on 27 Nov 2010, 04:49 GMT

can't download it either! my xbox keeps freezing on the download screen with the download about 3/4 of the way done! it just keeps spinning those 2 circles over and over once it gets to that point and won't progress any further. i can't believe i'm saying this but i am actually considering switching to ps3! which means i'll be basically trashing my xbox which worked decently until now and trading in a whole bunch of games. which also means i have wasted a lot of money over 3 years as i won't get near the actual value for the games i'll be trading!

Comment #42 by: dodgerdeezy on 03 Nov 2010, 02:13 UTC reply to this comment

Comment #46 by: JSun109 on 03 Nov 2010, 03:44 UTC reply to this comment

I had no problems prior to the new dashboard. Now I cannot log into live, my gamerscore isn't correct and to top it all off trying to recover my gamertag gives me an errror message and quits in the middle of the process so I can't even attempt to log in now.

Comment #47 by: Texas on 03 Nov 2010, 04:05 UTC reply to this comment

While trying to play Undead Nightmare, my 360 freezes up. I have tried it three times and each time the game freezes about 90 seconds in.

my xbox live just updated and now the menu only shows "My Xbox" and the "Welcome" channel..where is my netflix and everything..?

Comment #49 by: Netflix Issue on 03 Nov 2010, 04:40 UTC reply to this comment

I'm having issues with Netflix navigation via the new dashboard, and I couldn't find a place to mention it. Basically, when I try to look at my instant queue, after going through about 5 of my titles, it starts madly scrolling for about 10 seconds and then stops somewhere random. When I try to continue to move through my listed movies, it sometimes even shoots backwards. I had no trouble with the old dashboard Netflix, but there's some weird bug that basically keeps me from scrolling through my instant queue. I'm going to have to navigate it by using my computer all the time until you guys get it fixed.

Comment #49.1 by: Zanna360 on 05 Nov 2010, 16:12 GMT

Same thing here! I'm glad it's not just me. Netflix's queue is zooming around like it's possessed with poltergeists. You can't navigate with the analog stick without it flying out of control, sometimes backwards, sometimes forwards. Mine has a tendency to stop on a particular random documentary in the center of my queue. I have a little more success with scrolling through a few titles at a time with the shoulder buttons, but this only works 75% of the time and the rest of the time it just flies out of my hands. Netflix is the only reason I subscribe to Live, and if this isn't fixed in a couple of weeks I'm going to cancel my Live Gold account and go back to direct streaming from my computer to my tv without a pass thru box. It was cheaper anyway. Way to lose a customer with your ugly updates Microsoft!

I get MTU error

Comment #51 by: zurralaan on 03 Nov 2010, 07:49 UTC reply to this comment

Like everybody I had difficulty just getting the Xbox to update during the day since everyone was trying to update at the same time this was annoying and made the thing unusable for a while. This wasn't a real problem just an annoyance. My real problem now is with the graphics there are clear glitches with the display no matter what game I'm playing. It is abundantly clear that the update has screwed something up with the graphics card. If I'm not playing a game the dashboard looks real pretty but I didn't shell out my * earned money to stare at a pretty dashboard. It seems they screwed up my console and alot of others that worked just fine before the update so they could make the dashboard look pretty to try and lure some customers away from the wii. I wonder if they tested this on all the different Console hardware versions or if they just crossed their fingers and hoped for the best. All I can say is they better fix it fast or they'll never get another penny from me.

Comment #57 by: Wicki on 03 Nov 2010, 21:57 UTC reply to this comment

Since the update on the 1st, Most of the ten games i have played through i haven't noticed any problems. However, with Assassin's Creed 2, i find that the game will either start to lag and then freeze, or simply freeze right away after approx 5-20min of playing time. I borrowed my Friend's AC2 game and it still does the same thing. I thought to myself, "hmm, maybe it's my console not functioning correctly". So during class today i had one of my friends come play another game and played COD3 for about two hours without a single problem. Updates are supposed to make the experience better, not more of a headache.

We installed the XBOX LIVE dashboard update, and now cannot get onto our XBOX LIVE account, it said the XBOX LIVE MEMBERSHIP IS NOT VAILD. We purchased an entire year this past summer, in June. Any information on how to fix, please send to epcoombe@gmail.com.

Comment #69 by: Pseudo Hermit on 06 Nov 2010, 01:48 UTC reply to this comment

I have no problems with the new dashboard running applications, but.. well.. It looks like an unpolished alpha version of the last update with higher resolution... Higher resolution that promotes eye strain, and causes an aliasing effect on certain games that wasn't there before. Not a wise move to tweak graphical output on a well established library of titles.... Especially one that is not universally accommodating.

My xbox freezes on startup about 1 out of 5 times. And if it does start it only lasts about 5-10 minutes. And that is when I am playing a DVD.

My question is, instead of trying crank out this update to match the Kinect premiere date and make more money, why didn't they actually TEST the update first before releasing it? Don't companies do that anymore, or are they too concerned about saving face and profit margins? And their answer? '"Please Try Again",” the Xbox LIVE Operations team member added.' Wow, Microsoft, nice solution; maybe next you'll tell us to unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and * air into the disc slot to get the dust out, too; that ought to do it as well, right?

Comment #75 by: JAB on 07 Nov 2010, 01:00 UTC reply to this comment

My xbox no longer launches the game upon turning on the console. This is happening even though the start disc feature is selected as opposed to launch media player or launch dashboard. I have to select the play disc feature manually and although it's not a major inconvenience it still sucks. If you've had this complaint from others and there is a solution please e-mail me and let me know. Get your stuff together guys!

The changes to the Netflix interface are a step backward.

We have a 51" TV and a small living room. I have great eyesight and can barely read the small fonts for the movie descriptions. Who layed these pages out? Shrink the DVD cover picture, and suck up some of the unused white space. White font on red is oh-so fun to read. FIX this.

I have mailed and called XBOX support, their stance is that due to high volume of downloads..yada yada. Check the forums.. i am not the only one having this issue.. another electronic product released too soon. It burns me that i'm paying for a Live Subscription and can't use it.....

I have a older Xbox arcade system and immediately after updating the dashboard all of my games except one will not play. The system was reading and then open tray. Also all dvd's play fine. I have 34 games from various years of release dates and the one that still plays fine is prefect dark zero. I called MS and they said that it wasn't their update but the fact is I had no problems before the mandatory update. They also told me that mine is a isolated issue and no one else had this problem. I guess they don't read their own forums from there own website cause there are multiple format about the same issue with new and old systems. Also since my box is out of warranty they are trying to make me pay 120 dollars to get my box fixed for what they screwed up. All I want is MS to fix my box so I can play they games once again. Everyone who has this issue please contact MS cause they are still in denial about the mistake and issues they are making me deal with.

Nothing but problems. My Xbox has been flawless for the past few years, the day after the update is has stopped reading disks, i either have to install them or keep trying again and again to get them to run. When an error menu pops up to notify me that ive either already downloaded something i have, or havent, it repeatedly pops up again and again, preventing me from going back to my dashboard (which now looks horrible btw). It deleted several things and has caused me nothign but grief. It freezes when i start it up and im expecting it to die any day now.

This is pretty rediculous! this has been a problem since November 1st. This has impacted my games. I bought Black Ops opened it up placed it in my xbox360, it proceeded to ask me for the update, which I then downloaded. (I had no memory or HD unit attached at this time) The Xbox restared fine, booted up Black Ops, and the dashboard all fancy and new...etc. So I go in play the game fine for about an hour. I then turn the system off. Went to go play the very same game in the very same Xbox on "Campaign Mode" instead of Live--- it doesnt even load the campaign mode.?? it just stops...doesnt freeze, stops! I can get back to the dashboard (which I do) go into multiplayer, and load up Live... go into play the map "nuketown" ina live match...and it goes as far as showing that its loading the map but never actually does...just keeps spinning. It does this for Nuketown, Firing Range, Radiation, etc... I CAN play WMD, Array, * , Crisis, Cracked and Havana. So i then went and rented NHL 11 from Blockbuster and that game would play for 5 minutes, then the error "Disk is Dirty" would come up...and for every game there after..? This all started happening since the update..Nov.1 .. somebody please explain, this is a very poor effort on Microsoft. Google come out with a gaming system!!

Comment #118.2 by: Recon480 on 14 Feb 2011, 21:07 GMT

Microsoft put out a software update for the xbox360 around December 2010. Immediately after installing the update onto my xbox360 Pro, my xbox started having problem reading my game CD, such as BlackOps and Halo Reach. The game CD read would be intermittent, I would have to open and close the CD tray until it read the game. It stopped reading the game CD after 2 hours or so.

A month later, both of my son’s xbox360 Elite is experiencing the same problem but one is much worse than the other. One of the xbox360 Elite takes around 15 to 20 minutes to read, I have to open and close the CD tray until it reads. It keeps saying, “open tray”, it does not recognize the game CD. The other xbox360 elite is starting to do the same but it takes 3 to 4 time opening and closing the CD tray. I notice that the problem was more obvious at first with the xbox360 Pro, and with the xbox360 Elites it started to have problems a month later.

I was sure the problem was related to the xbox update so I called Microsoft when I first had the problem with the first xbox360 Pro back in December. Xbox/Microsoft stated that they’re not aware of this kind of issue. I wasn’t sure how to approached this issue so I decided to wait to see if other xbox owners were having the same problem. At that time in December I didn’t see any other issues posted online, but shortly after my sons xbox360 Elite started to have the same problem I went online to see if this was just a fluke problem. I found that a lot of people with the same problem and scenario that I experienced with my xbox’s.

I spoke to Microsoft regarding my son’s xbox360 Elites issues. The technician spent some time with me to troubleshoot the system but also concluded that there was nothing that could be done further. He also stated that he been seeing more customer calling about the “software update vs read issue” but there’s no solution at this time only a $100 repair fee. He also commented that he owned an xbox360 and also had experience the same issue when updated his xbox360, but unfortunately he was able to replace his at no cost!

There is a problem with the xbox software update affecting some xboxes. I have 4 xboxes, 3 are affected, the 4th xbox has gotten the update but because it does not have the online account and very seldom does my oldest son plays, I have not seen a problem yet.

I need Microsoft to make things right, so many people are have the same problem, Its not fair!!

Just updated both my Xbox Elite and Xbox 250gb slim again and both machines are now messed up.

The games the Xbox slim refuses to play eg [this disk is unreadable] all work perfectly in the Elite, but now I can only play those games on the Elite offline.

If I move my gamer profile from the Xbox slim to a usb flash drive and then plug the flash drive into the Elite, the Elite then says my profile is corrupt, but when I plug the flash drive back into the slim my profile is recognised perfectly. The usb flash drive is an official Xbox360/Sandisk 8gb.

When are Microcrap gonna sort this mess out??

Comment #120.1 by: mike on 22 Jan 2011, 12:33 GMT

your elite is flagged * you've obviously got it modded yer elite or chipped to play backups n been busted. that's what happens when you try transfering yer profile from a legit console to another console that has been flagged it'll come up corrupt

Comment #120.2 by: Spoogle on 26 Jan 2011, 11:29 GMT

I own 56 Xbox360 Disc games and all of them were bought over the counter in sealed cases. I've never modded anything or tried to copy any game, so you're talking bollox!

My 3 month old Xbox Slim has completely stopped reading any discs now [This disc is unreadable] - so I bought a new Xbox Slim the next day, downloaded the latest update and it reads all of my discs perfectly again.

If you ever get the [This disc is unreadable] message on your Slim, it has nothing to do with the update, but it means your CD drive is slowly dying.

They get paid for this! This is their job! And every time, their updates or new software falls flat on its face. Its ridiculous that we pay them for this. I say boycott.
