Want Intel to delay launch

According to the latest info on the market, some notebook vendors aren't happy with the anticipated release date of the Calpella platform, designed by Intel. The leading chip maker is expected to announce its new Calpella platform, designed to provide a higher level of performance for portable computer systems, sometime in the July/August period. However, that date could be changed if said notebook vendors are not capable of selling most of their Centrino 2-based portable computer systems.

According to a recent news-article on Digitimes, some notebook vendors consider that the estimated release date of Intel's Nehalem-based Calpella platform won't allow them to clear their inventories of the Centrino 2-powered portable systems. Apparently, laptop vendors have had a hard time dealing with the worldwide financial crisis that has been seriously affecting the overall sales of computer products. In addition, sales of fully-fledged Centrino 2-based laptops have seen a serious fall, mainly due to the increasing interest generated by the low-power, low-priced Atom-based netbooks.

The leading chip maker, based in Santa Clara, California, decided to maintain the prices for its Centrino 2 CPUs, consequently keeping netbook sales cannibalizing the company's low-range CPU products. The decision has led to the manufacturer’s falling short of setting the Montevina platform, to account for 80% of the company's notebook platforms, by 2008. Intel is yet to comment on the story, providing details on the technologies and products that are expected to be released in the new year.

In other news, Intel is scheduled to introduce its Clarksfield CPUs, designed for the mid-range and high-end notebook products, slated for release in July, August 2008. The new chips are to be accompanied by the 5-series Ibexpeak-M chipsets, including PM55/57, HM55/57, QM57 and the QS57 models.
